A 1st is basically the best kind of degree, it means you did well, then you get a 2-1, 2-2 etc, just like in high school you might get an A, B, C etc. Basically it's a way of representing how well you passed.

that's like graduating w/ Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, or Cum Laude..... me thinks...
Usually when you graduate with the latin phrases, it means you did some kind of research while being an undergrad on top of the high gpa. If I remember correctly, you get a diploma with the high distinction if your gpa is 3.8 or above, distinction if it's 3.67 or above.

Grade point average. It's a way of giving you a number for all your grades.
A = 4 points
B = 3 points
C = 2 points
D = 1 point
F = 0 points
Add up all your grades, then divide by the number of classes you took. That's your GPA.

Research? How would they define what is and what isn't research, and then grade it on a scale?
