One possible (and likely) reason no "source" is cited for the photographs is that a hospital employee may have 'leaked' them without the doctor or hospital's consent or knowledge, thus cannot give any information about the origin of the photos. This is how a lot of medical or crime scene type photos find their way to the internet. I don't necessarily object, so long as no identification of the patient/victim is possible from the photos and the essential facts are accurate.
They are most certainly photos from a hospital, taken at the direction of a physician. I've taken a bunch of photos like this, having been deemed the resident on-shift 'electronics nut' in the surgical departments at which I've worked.
Contrary to Snope's attempt to down play the risk from Brown Recluse bites, they often result in dime-to-quarter sized tissue necrosis and cellulitis. Not as bad as this poor guy's thumb, but still nasty stuff. The medical expert Snopes cites betrays his own attempt to play down the risk of Brown Recluse bites:
"Almost all brown recluse spider bites heal nicely in two to three months without medical treatment at all."
In
two to three months??
😕
