I've been searching for a laptop these past few days and have made several post in search of the perfect laptop. well, i got shunned twice from both best buy and microcenter for various reasons, and i called dell to no avail. I turned to apple and i just bought a 15" powerbook for $2525.93!!! god damn!!!

i wanted to spend less than $1400!

- 15" 1Ghz Powerbook
- 512 MB RAM
- 40 GB HD
- Airport card
- carrying case
- ipod 10 gb

Now, must find software!!!

hey now, $2500 was not the cost of just the laptop, you got an Ipod too. People will form a lynch mob proclaiming how expensive apples are.

theres a lot of free "linux" type software around, open source and the like, if you post in operating systems or applications/programming/games you might get some results, those guys know a ton :)

yea during my process, i would find something i like, but then it turns out it has some parts that i didn't like.

I wanted builtin wifi card, separate video memory and something light. im sure i could've found something with
all three criterias and spent less than what i was quoted, but the powerbook just look sweet!

The video card does have seperate memory(64MB I believe), and the 15" PowerBook is one of the lightest laptops of its size. The only thing lighter would have been a smaller laptop, such as the 12" PowerBook or iBook. As for a builtin wifi card, you're correct in that it's not "on-chip" logic, but it has a special slot on the inside for the Airport card, so you'll never see it(if that's what you're worried about.

PS PHP, MySQL and Apache are all free. Apache already comes installed(although disabled), and you can easily find MySQL and PHP. Look at http://versiontracker.com for a huge list of software

Good to hear that you didn't go cheap with no name brand crap.

Although I would have sprung for the more portable 12" PB, congrats!

Kick ass! I have been on the fence. I want to get a new PowerBook, but I want to wait until the new 15" models are released.

You can't go wrong with the purchase you made. If you need to know about software, hit me with a PM and we can chat. :D

Apache is already installed. To enable it, go to System Preferences > Sharing and enable "personal web sharing". I think that MySQL comes with OS X, too, but I've never needed to use it, I'm sure you can find a tutorial...

Also, if you're looking for unix/linux software, install fink. Fink will allow you to install software as simply as doing, for instance "fink install php"... then wait a minute while PHP is downloaded and installed, and you're done. There's a lot of software available on Fink.

Also, fink allows you to install an X server, so that you can run GUI unix apps. Or, you can use apple's X11 that you can download for free.

If you need any software for the machine, feel free to PM me. :)

You know, you should've asked us here first, honestly...this is why:

Apple has a promotion right now where if you buy a portable (such as yours) with your student discount, and an iPod, you get a $200 rebate. With the student discount, you'd have gotten that iPod for $70! Maybe you can return it or something...and if things work out well, feel free to swing some compensation my way, to help pay for MY iPod. ;)

edit: plus, your pbook would've been $200 cheaper. :)

Well what does the Touchpad have? The 12" Apple comes with the following:
867mhz G4 processor
256MB PC2100 RAM
40GB HD
Combo Drive(CD-RW/DVD-ROM)
Bluetooth
GeForce 4 Go 420, 32MB
5 hours of battery time(approx.)
4.6lbs w/battery
Firewire
10/100 ethernet port
Most people also order an AirPort Extreme card, which is an 802.11g card that goes on the inside
