Broadwell-EP multiplier locked or not?

I've seen reports that it might be but no definite answers. Just wondering....
I've got a e5 1650v4 incoming.
 
Can't recall any unlocked Xeons?

You can probably get all the cores to run at the turbo multiplier though.
 
Don't any X99 motherboards support FSB overclocking like in the old days? I was kicking around the idea of getting one of these Xeons too. Is that just not a thing anymore? The multiplier unlocked way of overclocking is much simpler and more straightforward, but why don't the older methods still work?
 
Burpo could probably answer it better but messing with the fsb on new gen cpus have only a minimal amount of effective range, perhaps a 2% overclock.
FSB interacts with Ram/MB and CPU. (i.e. ram that you might not want to raise)
On older chips fsb was the only way to do it since the clock rate was fixed.
 
Probably FSB overclock on -EP chips will be a thing with Skylake considered core clocks are separated from the other components.
Unless they lock that method too... they will definitely or we would see very soon 28 cores up to 4GHz under liquid cooling 😉

Meanwhile it looks like all Broadwell server parts are blocked to at most all core turbo speed, so unless single core turbo is high you won't overclock much, if the motherboard and bios allow it of course.

i wonder if you can overclock it over BCLK strap though it's multiplier locked. can you check it out, please?
 
Yeah, multiplier is locked! I'm sure I could probably raise bclk a bit but imo it's just not worth messing with.

Yeah, bclk OCing is worthless unless BCLK strap works.
I was just double-checking because I've seen hwinfo results online and found out that 4770K and G3258 are showing the same result like the links below

Yeah multiplier is definitely locked. Cpu strap looks to be adjustable. I haven't really tried though so i'm not positive.
 
I'm not hopeful with Broadwell based Xeon as well.
It doesn't seem to be overclockable at all. So I decided not to go for Xeon.

No problem. Good call, I definitely wouldn't buy one if overclocking is important to you. My chip will eventually find it's way into a server and i'll be buying a server board for it.

My old system is X5660@4.6GHz and now I am building a new gaming PC, trying to figure out what the best option is.
Well I'm still thinking about Xeon 1660 V4 though. 6800K might perform better for gaming so I can't really decide yet lol

Mostly gaming? Skylake 6700K no doubt.
I'll be using this rig mainly for work, Adobe PP, handbrake, etc. A little gaming (not much) mostly older games.

For a gaming PC don't think about Xeons. Get the Core i7s so you can overclock them.
