Well, while this is horrible treatment, consider for a moment some of the tactics the Iraqi's used against us. Feigning surrender and then attacking, attacking from behind women and children, etc.

So it's hard to feel sorry for them. Actually after they started pulling their tricks I thought we should stop taking prisoners all together.

Well, this is where strong, effective leadership should have intervened from the very beginning. In this business, it is very easy to cross back over the line. We define "the line" as one seperating the fighter from the benefactor. For example, we do our best to put a round through some hapless idiot one minute only to care for him or his buddies the next. The task becomes much more difficult when a fellow soldier is KIA or wounded or the rumor mill starts up.

If the adrenaline is flowing or you've taken some losses, especially close friends, some ugly things happen that you never tell anybody because they don't understand. They won't understand. So you keep it inside and it hurts like hell sometimes. But you go on. In otherwords, there is quite alot of crap that happens which the public never hears about.

These revelations didn't surprise me in the least. To begin with, speaking from first hand knowledge, the Brit forces are indeed a rowdy bunch both on and off the battlefield. Next, I can safely say that I've seen worse although not with prisoners. This incident is one of the many, many reasons why we call war the "dirty business". Clear, level-headed leadership must take control out there.

This incident was wrong and I'll leave it at that. Some of the Vietnam vets and other Gulf War vets on this board can probably attest to the same.

The first para is reasonable... but, the second... the second one is... well... not related to the Iraqi situation at all... this is about power over people and not sexual orientation. If this story is true, It shows a hatred so profound that one should try to understand what causes a soldier to delight in one of the most demeaning of occurances against a fellow human...
