British Lawyer asking for an A** kicking... Says USA is illegal

When it comes to rebellions, might makes right. As Blackthorne mentions to his Japanese overlord in Shogun, the overarching reason that legitimates rebelling against your sovereign is when you win (though possibly only for the short term, as shown by Cromwell and his Puritans victory and later demise).:colbert:

If the Confederate states had won the civil war, their secession would have been de facto legitimate albeit not de jure.

Of course, you can instead go the Canadian route and use reason & logic to convince the imperium to grant your nation independence because it's the right, moral thing to do and will benefit both countries.

That's why I agreed.

History is written by the victors. It's one of those things you have to keep in mind when reading anything history-related. It's more pronounced the further back you go.

slow to the party ...

This. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were well aware that what they were doing was illegal under British law. That is the whole point of a revolution, to throw off the shackles of old tyranny and forge new shackles of your own.

The Declaration of Independence was “illegal” and “treasonable,” according to a team of British lawyers, the BBC reports.
And every middle school kid in the United States knows this. The signers of the Declaration of Independence knew this. And, they knew that if we lost, they would have been hung as traitors.

The British lawyers just figured this out 235 years later?! What a bunch of maroons.

"The grievances listed in the Declaration were too trivial to justify secession," the British lawyers wrote. "The main one -- no taxation without representation -- was no more than a wish on the part of the colonists, to avoid paying for the expense of protecting them against the French during seven years of arduous war and conflict."

Those same threatening French, who if we didn't have their assistance, we'd probably still be British right now...

What an inane argument. Of course a Declaration of Independence is illegal under the system of laws they foisted on the colonies. At the very same time, I would say the British empires establishment of colonies in America while maybe legal under their system was morally and ethically reprehensible. So what exactly are they trying to say?

When it comes to things like this, might makes right. That's it and that's all. You can try and throw all the paper you want at the problems you created but when the Revolution went down, we kicked their ass and earned our country. Their laws ceased to apply to the colonies as soon as the Declaration was signed so legal or not, it's irrelevant.

PS: Big shout out to the Frenchies for backing us up. Lobsterbacks can bite the weanie.

Brilliant

Take some of the few things this country still makes... steel and automobiles... and give them away to foreigners

That'll show em 🙄

Psssst -- it was a joke!

At any rate, Gary is the asshole of the US and one of the murder capitals of the US, with Detroit generally up there as well. Chicago would probably be OK if we could ship their crooked politicians to Britain.

Maybe while we're at it, they should take South Bend too.

Just kidding. 😀

They can have New York.
Mexico can have Texas.
Give california to the Indians.

BUT THE REST, is OURS!
And we bitch slap anyone who tries to cross.

you realize those are the few countries that do or come close to paying more in federal taxes than receiving federal monies?

without those states, this country is fucked.

that's exactly what i was thinking.

i remember reading (i think it was in dillon "blue press" magazine) stories about what happened to the signers of the declaration of independence. don't know how many got found/imprisoned as traitors, but the bulk of them lost their fortunes and estates during the conflict.

Of course it wasn't legal.

but that fact is entirely irrelevant as the issue of American independence was settled out of court.

:hmm:

I'm not entirely certain the bolded part is true... especially in this day and age.

Oh they're definitely shit holes... no doubt about it. Just shit holes that built this country and left its citizens to rot.

I found out where each of the British lawyers live and when they wouldn't be home.
Each member of my family now has their own house in England (after changing some locks).
British law for the win!

Everyone should take note. This shows why the idea that "the law is the law" is dangerous.

If everyone practiced that, we would still be in the dark ages. Most of the time laws have to be broken to force change.
