What are F&C served with in the UK? Lemon / malt vinegar / smashed peas, no tartar?

It's American as apple pie. Apple pie as you know is pretty fucking generic.

Apple Pie is nummy.

Disney has been pasteurizing things for ages. Tolkien on his death bed had a condition Disney would never be allowed to touch LOTR.

The food at Disney World just freaking sucks. Wait in line for an hour at one of the MacDonalds stands, ponder what you will order, find out the Menu has Chicken Nuggets, Fries, and Pop/Soda......nothing else.

I think I've had enough of fish and chips. Maybe they served up mediocre fish, that could be it. I read recently that a lot of the fish you buy (at any but the most reputable markets, etc.) is not what it's purported to be. The only fish I buy anymore for home consumption is canned albacore tuna from Costco. Not only am I concerned with the integrity of it ("All wholesome food is caught without a net or a trap." - William Blake), I wonder about ingesting whatever has accumulated in the food chain.

Most apply pie is generic, yeah (and too sweet), but I found out what great apple pie is. Used to live in L.A. and went to The Apple Pan.

Never had fish & chips at Disney/Epcot so I can't speak to that specifically. However just like any other prepared food the quality of fish & chips varies widely wherever you eat it.

Having said that, Long John Silver's is not good at all.

Is there any good British food? The Brits know beer, but they can't even make a decent sandwich.

The only fast food fish and chips I can remember is Arthur Treacher's and that was ages ago. When I was a kid they were everywhere, now they're almost gone. Not a big deal, here on the coast seafood is everywhere. Lots and lots of little hole-in-wall food stands that do fried clams, lobster rolls and fish & chips.

Hey, I remember them! Introduced me to malt vinegar goodness. I think the corner gas station plot they built on on is now a decrepit mini mall, the fish and chips are gone forever.

Their Indian influenced dishes are awesome. Fish/Chips and Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding is pretty good, but not spectacular.

I've had plenty of crappy fish and chips in England.... just because it's popular doesn't mean it's usually good.

There is plenty of crap fish and chips to be had in the UK. If you're going to try some, I would suggest getting a recommendation from a local who seems a bit discerning, and then *maybe* you'll get something decent. If they say something like "that place was good the last time I tried it, but they've changed owners since", then that is not a recommendation.

There's a lot that can be done wrong when making fish and chips: a crappy source of fish results in tasteless fish, crappy batter, too much batter, not enough fish, crap chips that have been made with crap potatoes or simply not cooked correctly. Most fish (I've tried anyway) have a pretty subtle/delicate taste already, some have less than that and it goes along with the fish's freshness. IMHO a decent chunk of cod loin is what's needed, but cod fillet is cheaper so that will sometimes get used, then there are several other types of 'white fish' that literally taste of nothing at all IMO, but they're a lot cheaper than cod.

It's a shame that cod is getting over-fished in the UK's locality so I'd feel guilty if I had it that often.

I knew a fellow who worked at Long John Silvers and got tired of being called seaman so he went to work dressed as a pirate including a half pint of rum in his back pocket and talked like a pirate. The boss was not amused and fired him.

Fish & chips are awesome. Tartar sauce eats shit. I wish more places over here had malt vinegar, but unless you go to a British themed pub, you're probably SOL.

I've never been a fan of British food. They might be known for F&C and Sheppard's Pie, but it doesn't mean they make the best.

Arthur Treacher's was my family's favorite as a kid. In my town, they all closed up. One guy bought the recipe and kept one store open though, and fortunately for me it's only a couple of minutes drive time from my office. http://marinosseafood.net/

FYI-Long John Silver's is crap. I'm sure theme park fish & chips isn't any better.

Good fish & chips is freaking awesome. You haven't had it yet.

Go to any gastropub and get fish and chips. Or go to any Wisconsin "supper club" on Friday for their fish fry.
