He made it so this is some amazing, hugely important event. If he had been eaten by Piranhas he'd be a Darwin award winner. The fact that wanting to do this made him a Darwin candidate, I feel even though he didn't die he's still a moron.
Nobody knew what was up there, it's not like we don't know what's at the end of the Amazon river. I'm not saying Amundsen is a smart man for doing what he did. But at least he DISCOVERED something (that nothing was up there, but something) This Brit discovered jack shit

ha ha ha. That really is a standard British comprehension of geography. They have none. Most of them think that it takes about 1 hour, tops, to get to california from new york.
Oh well, at least he can go back and tell his mates "Hey, the amazon is FREAKING HUGE".
Haha, are you serious or do you just have a chip on your shoulder? It's common knowledge that most USA residents don't even know where Canada is.
I wasn't commenting on the US citizens geography concepts (many of them can't even find their own state on the map). Just the fact that most people from britain have no concept of size.
Why is that?
I don't know why it is, it just is. From what I've heard, it is pretty common for other island nations as well. They tend to think that everything is the same size as the nation that they live in. So if it takes 6 hours to travel across your nation, it must take 6 hours to travel across every nation.

So what you're saying is you are just making it up, no basis in fact?

I think some of this has to be made up, he said he was captured by Indian tribes, yet everything I've read about the tribes along the Amazon is most have little to no contact with outside people and don't speak a known language. Yet, one captures him and they radio to the next to ask if he can pass thru. How exactly did he talk to them? Sounds like a bullshit drinking buddy story to me.
What do you want from me? A scientific study? No, I have not conducted a scientific study on the geographical understanding of the british. I base my opinion, right or wrong, on my personal experience (I lived in england for 2 years) along with the personal opinion of those that surrounded me.
I'm not just "making it up", I have had personal anecdotal evidence to support it. However, that being said, I don't have a hard set of data to back up my claim.
This is ATOT. You don't have the right to disagree with anyone until you have at least 3 peer reviewed studies to back up your opinion. Otherwise you're just a moron. Pretty sure it's spelled out in the forum guidelines.![]()
