... ya. Box it? Should I disassemble all the HDD's and PCI from the motherboard, or leave it in? Carryon? Can I carry it on? Should I? carry it in luggage? How do I pack it?

I'd say get a large box and put the whole system in there, except take off any heavy CPU heatsink you might have, and if you do that, perhaps take out the CPU and package it, and put the harddrives in anti-static bags just in case. Other than that, I don't think theres anything you should be worried about.

I had a long road trip just a couple of months ago.

I only took out my 947U because it is very heavy.

HDD is fine since it is screwed in.

Leave the CPU on, take off the HSF and Fan? And put it in a blanket in a box?

Isn't that expensive? Why not just check in luggage for free?

Have you ever read stories about what kind of treatment your luggage gets in the regular baggage line? I have no idea how much of it is true but I've heard enough that you will never see me bringing my box up into the air. I'd ground ship it, insured, or at least ask the airline about some kind of special care service that you can send it through.
Unless you're not all that concerned about it ;)

well i took the cpu out too since i had its old sponge case still. i dont think u need to since the clip is really REALLY stable.

I had a road trip, so i wraped my comp in my blanket and put it all in the back of a Van which was pretty stuff so it wasnt shaking around or anything.

For a plane trip tho,
If u still got the box the case came in i would use that. my antec case had like super hard foam.

If u are really worried about ur stuff. then i would take out the HSF, CPU, RAM and HDD and put them in anti-static bags and box them in a plain box with peanuts and bring that on with u in the plane.

the case, mobo, drives and fans should be fine, all are screwed on.

I too have heard of how badly the plane ppl treat lugguage.

That would cost a pretty penny, wouldn't it? Especially from Toronto to Vancouver?

try to pad it on the insite... i would say make sure everything is screwed on tightly, then, stuff the inside of your case with stuff like grocery bags, cotton, styrofoam peanuts, etc. Everything snaps off pretty easily inside a computer. also cover the outside with at least a blanket or two.

You're hauling a relatively valuable, sensitive piece of equipment most of the way across the country. What did you expect? And don't you think it would cost a pretty penny to replace things when they start breaking too? It's up to you, really. I'm just saying what I'd do.

If you're not super attached to this piece of hardware I'd consider picking up something else once you're over there and leaving this one here or selling it first.

Considering the average computer is worth 1000 dollars, paying 50 bucks for insured shipping is definately worth it.
It gives you a piece of mind in case anything breaks.

Take out your hard drive and carry that on you. Open the case and store a few bricks of play-doh somewhere, sticking in some random wires for visual effect. When in vancouver, build a new computer with the compensation you got for them detonating yours in a controlled explosion.

Seriously, box it, pad it lots, use insured shipping.

Ship it UPS ground even if it costs $50. Go to a UPS store and let them help you pack it.
Airport handlers are animals, they throw luggage and boxes around.
I went on a trip earlier this year. put a bottle of booze in my luggage in between my cloths. Guess what, it was smashed, the booze went all over my cloths, had to visit a laundry mat to wash them. It was as if they threw luggage at mine like a torpedo. I'll never put anything in my luggage but cloths. From now on, booze and all my electronic toys travel in my carry on.
And there's no way you can carry the computer on the plane, it's too big. You only get 1 carry on bag, plus a camera/laptop bag.

There is another way. Take it with you to the loading ramp and they will tell you it is to big to carry on and ask you to check it, tell them it is a very delicate electronic insturment and they will take it down by hand to the cargo area and when you get off the plane it will be right outside the door of the plane, that is if you can get it through screening.

Ever thought of calling the airline and asking? I know that they require laptops to be powered up.
My guess is that they probably wouldn't let it through security. Pack it in a shipping box for a PC not for just a case. These can be bought at a PC wholesaler. Then ship it UPS or FED-EX. It's not that expensive.

Spoken like a true geek.

Having said that, I agree with the rest of the posters: if you do nothing else, pull the CPU heatsink. A few years ago I had a friend fly with his box. He didn't, the HS broke loose at some point and ending up smashing into the processor, chipping the corner of the die (it was an Athlon without a heatspreader) and rendering the proc useless. I'm actually looking at the proc right now (future keychain)...

I would love to see you go thru the TSA security checkpoint with that thing. They will want to open it up and do a complete/full inspection on the inside, and for good reason too. I know of a person who has a super thin and light laptop, conversation went like this:

TSA: "We are going to take this apart."
Traveler: "Why?"
TSA: "Well look at it...its so thin and light, I can't imagine why anyone would want a computer like that. So we are inspecting it."

So ya, I think your best bet is getting it packed at a UPS store, and ground shipping it w/ insurance.

Don't send it through checked luggage. Baggage insurance usually excludes any electronic items (convenient for them) so if they totally trash your package, too bad for you. Taking it as a carry-on is a good option, if you can meet the size requirements and don't mind the extra weight of carrying it around. TSA is very familiar with computer screenings these days and don't require powering the device up at all -- that was all pre 9/11 when you could ask for a mere hand inspection of electronic devices, no more so today. Everything gets x-rayed.

TSA? he is going from toronto to vancouver - i don't think Canadian airport security has anything like that - and don't think I am trying to be offensive - I am Vancouver born Canadian!

Whats wrong with just bagging it and sitting it on your lap for the journey? one bag for the box and another for the monitor with other stuff. So it shouldnt get used as a football or chucked about, nice n safe :D
