i would never dream of trying this in the USA

I'd never dream of accepting this in the US. $20 wouldn't be anywhere near enough...

SearchMaster, your friend may be pulling your leg

Never bribed anyone the entire time I was in India

On hindsight, I should have - it wasn't worth all the hassles :(

So i had gone inside a big office complex to give my beloved k750 for repair (water damage :()

there was a line of cars outside, i just assumed it was street parking and pulled up behind the last one and parked there. (not a no-parking sign in site).
i was in the office building for about 20 minutes, and when i came back out, all the cars were gone. i asked a nearby guard if he had seen anything, and he said that the cop who had towed it had left his cell number.

i called the guy, and turned out he was right at the end of the same street, so i ran there right away. the conversation i had went something like this:

cop: "hi, yes i will have to tow this to the station a few blocks away, because it is a 1000 rupee fine and only they can give you a reciept"

me: "oh, ok"

him "license and registration"

i hand him my license and open up the car and start rummaging for the registration

him: "man its late...i hope that someone will be there at the station.. this is such a bother having to tow it all the way there"

me: "well there's no other way, is there..."

him: "oh, you could just pay me here. i'll make it 400 for you, because you've been nice and cooperative. here's your license, forget about showing me the registration"

i hand him 400 rupees...

him: "thanks, have a nice day!"

drops my car down from the tow truck and speeds away...

I'd heard stories about how easy cops were to bribe here in India, but this is the first time I've experienced it firsthand. I would have been perfectly willing to go to the station and pay the 1000, except he really didn't seem too inclined to do so.

cliffs:
-i parked on a street thinking it was allowed
-it wasn't, i was towed
-cop gave me an easy way out
-i took it

being a cop is an entrepernureal job in most countries

Last time I went back to India customs guy was hassling me even though Im an Indian citizen (NRI...permanent resident in US). After about 15 mins, the guy asked me "do you have 20 dollars (not rupees mind you, dollars...which is like 1000 rupees) on you?" I was reluctant in giving him a bribe because he had no reason to give me trouble. But whatever, $20 saved me whatever misery lay before me if I hadnt paid.

Such is the way in India. Pay is so low there for low level govt employees that they depend on bribes like this to maintain a decent life

It's kind of neat, if you ask me. They are public servants and their paycheck does come from your pocket. This way, you just cut out the middle man and save each of you some money. It's the most efficient way to run a country. Talk about small government :p

India is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. But it is still a fairly law-abiding country. The vast majority of corruption takes place where infrastructure and implementation of any bureaucratic procedure is involved. The infrastructure is so poor that often times you cannot get anything done without paying a bribe. Like in vshah's case, in most cases the bribe is for convenience rather than some illicit activity, though plenty of illicit activities do take place too.

...and with a $20 none the less... hah.

Try $200 and then MAYBE I would say this COULD happen, for $20 there's no way you're bribing a cop here.

yeah, no crap.

My uncle (alcoholic) keeps a $100 bill in his wallet to bribe cops when he gets pulled over for DUI. I guess that worked pretty well for him in his area of Alabama. I haven't seen him in 10 years and he has since moved to Virginia, so I imagine it takes more money to bribe a cop now.

How much is 400 rupees?

Good for you. I have to agree with yllus that you didn't bribe him... it's more like he extorted you.

Yeah, it's pretty common here. Aren't you the dude with the Land Cruiser? If it had been an Alto/Zen or something, you could have gone away with a hundred. :p

it was my other car (little fiat)
if it was the land cruiser he couldn't have touched it since it has UN (diplomatic) plates.

The fact that so many of you Indians see this as bribes rather than extortion/blackmail says a lot. Perhaps corruption is a way of life for many, but to spin it into an almost positive light... well, i guess i won't go there (yet).

Do the people of those nations consider it bribery or extortion? Do they put an almost positive spin on having to do it?

I was in the car at the time - I saw it. Now, it WAS almost 25 years ago, $20 was worth a bit more then, but I was surprised he got away with such a small amount. The cop probably felt sorry for us poor high school students.
