That guy's a loser.

If he really wanted to put his CoD skills to the test he should have tried that on military base to see how far he could get. I think it's safe to bet there would be no trial.

So many accusations have come out of that trial. Everything from a neo-nazi conspiracy to take over Europe to some right-wing radicalism to genocide to video games has been claimed to be the supposed motivation for the attack. People who write for the tabloids are idiots and those who read them with the intent of drawing some factual info are even stupider.
 
The dude is friggin insane. I have to admit that the way Norway tries cases is extremely interesting. I'm sure it really pisses of the "proud to be" americans who would rather just execute him now

wrong. Most agree he needs the electric chair. Most people will also admit he would have the right to defend himself first.

I'd bet the majority of Americans would say he doesn't even deserve a trial and should go straight to the chair. Luckily Norway doesn't have capital punishment

Max prison sentence in Norway is 21 years. If you're considered a danger to the public after serving the max sentence of those 21 years then you can be held further.

He'll likely rot in jail for as long as he's alive.

The trial was supposed to be televised but the court decided against it because he'd spread his batshit crazy ideology. The papers aren't restricted, though, so they're having a field day.
 
I can understand the idea that video games, especially first person shooters, are going to increase someone's ability with guns. I've never fired a gun. I couldn't field-strip a weapon or put one back together. But I know some basic principles from playing games like Counter-Strike and Battlefield. I know how to drop a magazine, load another one and cock a weapon. I know that I need to scope down the sights of the gun if I want to hit anything. I know that I should fire in controlled bursts rather than going full-auto and having the recoil buck everywhere. If my only knowledge of guns came from watching action movies or television, I don't know that I'd be able to handle a gun effectively at all. Video games have given me a (presumably false) sense that I know how to wield a gun with at least some effectiveness. Obviously the real world is a completely different scenario, but video games do lay the groundwork for basic use of a firearm, and that can be the difference between the psycho who sprays an area with a submachinegun and hits no one and the psycho who carefully picks his targets and takes them down with precision.

Things like exchanging a mag are common sense, that anyone with ten minutes could figure out with a gun and couple of mags.

Aiming isn't anything like games IRL. Your eye/front sight/rear sight are always perfectly in line in a game, as your weight is always balanced and solid. Not to mention the crosshair. In basic training, about a third of the soldiers couldn't even zero their weapons at first (25 yards 3 single shots at same point, must be < 3" apart). And that was with them in a foxhole supported against wood and dirt, totally stable.

Point is, only gun handling can give you the skills needed to shoot well. I can fly 747's in a flight simulator, which is actually in-depth knowledge of flying... and I'd crash and burn IRL if I tried it in a real plane, because I have no idea of the 'feel' of flying one.
