Okay here is the scoop: I have Poland's Syndrome, meaning I have no left pectoral muscle. Tonight my mother told me our insurance might cover a breast implant, but it runs out in December for me and I would have to have it done before then. It has bothered me for a while having my left side of my chest flat and I feel that this may bring my spirits up a little but I am worried it might look funny.

hmm. I guess if insurance covered all of it I'd do it, otherwise it could be good for some bar bets....

good luckNo, when I used to work out my pectorial minor (upper part of the pec) on my left side was like twice as thick as the right side. I can also stick my thumb underneath it, it is kind of funny sometimes.

Unfortunately, you have the same problems as any female would have getting one, and maybe even worse. Assuming you take a blow to the chest(heck, a simple door slam will do), it's possible that you might pop the implant, since unlike a female, you don't have any natural tissue protecting it. Health risks aside, I'd reccomend against it. I could never reccomend that a woman get an implant outside of replacing something lost due to cancer or such(so she would still look like a woman), so I couldn't reccomend it to a man for pure cosmetic reasons either.

Correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm not someone who works in the medical field, but wouldn't an implant of this type be structurally different from a typical female breast implant? The goal of a female implant is to be as natural looking/feeling as possible, which neccessitates the use of a soft, squishy gel type implant. In this case, the use of some kind of inert harder substance sounds like it would be more appropriate. If that's the case, the typical door-slam would probably be relatively harmless.

Well I was told before it would be better to get a muscle transplant, but that is more dangerous extra and cost like 8 grand. I will have to see if that is covered. I was planning on getting the muscle transplant after I get out of college and get a steady job.
Muscle would probably be better I think. If you start working out your right pec it would eventually get larger than the implant in your left

This cracks me up. Breast implants have never been proven to cause any health problems. In fact, after Dow was bankrupted, the courts were finally forced to admit this. No unbiased, independant study has shown ANY increased cases of connective tissue disorder, or any of the other multitude of illnesses people have tried to pin on these.
But the damage is done. The folklore has been planted and all the unbiased facts in the world wont change it.
It's sad, really.

If getting this done will make you feel better about yourself, by all means do it. Keep in mind that ALL invasive procedures involve a bit of risk. The question is, will the increase in your self esteem be worth the small risk invasive surgery presents?

Do what your concience and your doctor recommend, not a bunch of geeks in a chat forum. I think giving health advise is a bad idea here, like practicing medicine without a license.:disgust:

Damn...got all excited....voted after only reading the title. Dude do it if you feel the need...especially if insurance will cover it. I know what it's like to live with a handicap...but that's another story.
