I actually knew Susan growing up and this was a tragedy that will affect many. I feel sorry for the case worker who had to witness such horror, but apparently Josh was standing outside the house when the social worker and the kids showed up. He must have been filling the house with gas for some time. He pretty much pushed the kids inside slammed and locked the door on the social worker. Within minutes the house exploded, while the social worker was on the phone with her supervisor. Apparently, right before the social worker called she pounded on the door and windows. I put no fault on the social worker. This was clearly thought out and planned in advance and the situation, though terrible, would have been difficult to predict/prevent.

That is just terrible. I cannot imagine someone hating their own kids that much.

He must have felt that the investigators were going to charge him with murder eventually and/or that maybe they were closing in on the evidence they need. It's like he wanted to send a final "fuck you" to society.

As a social worker, she is requird to have Obama 2012 tatooed on her neck instead. You got the rest right, though. ;)

As a supporter of Republican candidates and opponent of Obama, do you have an image of Jesus tatooed on your neck?

bullcrap. he had a home visitation. She brings the kids, he answers the door and pushes her back out, closes and locks the door and BOOM!
She's not a linebacker or superwoman, just some lady. She's not going to overpower him and control the kids and save the day. Get real.

Yeah.

I think Powell would have killed her too. Her presence wasn't going to stop anything. IMO, she's lucky to still be alive.

This story is just CRAZY. For those of you who haven't been a part of this 3 year drama:

-Several years ago he allegedly takes his two kids, ages 3 and 5 (or somewhere around there) camping at midnight on the coldest night of the year in December out in utahs west desert.

-Comes back, can't find his wife, she's now 'missing'.

-He's obviously the number one suspect, police seize his house and vehicles. He does not cooperate in any way, shape or form with the police.

-He rents a car and puts several hundred miles on it over the course of a few days.

-Less than one month later, he moves back to Washington to live with his dad, he brings his two boys with him.

-His own sister and members of his missing wife's family go on shows like Dr. Phil pretty much accusing Josh. Josh's mom (who is separated from his dad) completely stays out of the picture.

-Josh and his dad claim susan ran away with some other guy that happened to go missing around the same time.

-Eventually a custody battle over the children and a mud slinging contest gets underway between Susans Parents (the Cox's) and Josh and his father Steven Powell.

-Steven Powell bazaarly states that there is some kind of pseudo affair that was taking place between him and Josh's missing wife, Susan. Steven and Josh claim she is some kind of sex weirdo and they want to publish her personal journal to prove it. Steven claims that Susan was always coming on to him. Susans friends claim that susan had complained in the past about her creepy father in law that always came on to her.

-A year or so goes by and suddenly there is a huge hunt for a body in Utah's west desert where the police believe the body might be. Nothing comes of this.

-More time goes by, the Susans parents, the Cox's try to get custody of the children. The police in washington raid Steven Powell's home on an 'unrelated manner' and seize his computer equipment. They find tons of child pornography and voyeurism videos of women and underage girls in the neighborhood that he filmed himself. They also find voyeurism videos that he took of Susan.

-Eventually the Cox's get custody of the children. This happened a few months ago

-Josh is trying to get his kids back. He moves out of his dads house and tries to prove to the court he can be a father. The court mandates him to take a psychosexual evaluation and polygraph test if he wants his kids back. He is very irate at this.

-Josh's brother posts some weird website about how the Cox's are abusing the kids and unfit to take care of them.

-Before he can take the test he has a visitation with his kids, and trapped them in a house with him and started the house on fire.

I'm sure I forgot and skipped a lot of the drama, but this has been a wild case. General consensus is that he is a controlling psychopath. Susan was going to leave him and take the boys, so he killed her. He gets off free for a few years before he realizes he can't get away with it so instead he kills himself and the boys.

and just when you thought this couldn't get crazier, it looks like Steve (the father-in-law) probably met up with Josh (the husband) when Susan went missing. did they both kill/bury her? looks like it is possible

Steve Powell called in sick to work a day after his daughter-in-law, Susan Cox Powell, disappeared from her home in West Valley City, Utah, more than two years ago, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.

Powell, an account executive with Washington State Correctional Industries, sent an email that requested sick leave for Dec. 8-9, 2009, his former employer reported Tuesday.

The days coincide with the period that his son Josh Powell, Susan’s husband, rented a Ford Focus from Salt Lake International Airport, putting more than 800 miles on the vehicle before returning it about 7 p.m. Dec. 10, 2009.

West Valley City Police Chief Thayle “Buzz” Nielsen has said that Steve Powell might be an accomplice in Susan Powell’s disappearance and presumed death.

Wow. That appears to be one sick on of a bitch, on many levels. Hopefully with this info the cops can start pressuring him big time in order to at least recover her body.

What a crazy and dreadful story. It certainly sounds like the apple didn't fall far from the tree when it comes to being complete dirtbags. It's unfortunate that Susan fell in with these people. The father's music is about as creepy as anything I've ever heard, knowing the circumstances.

A jury on Wednesday convicted Steve Powell on all 14 charges in a voyeurism case that stemmed from an investigation into the 2009 disappearance of his daughter-in-law Susan Powell, a Utah mother of two who has never been found.
Steve Powell simply looked off into a corner of the courtroom as the verdict was read, showing no emotion. Attorney Anne Bremner, who represents Susan Powell's family, smiled.
Susan Powell's parents believe Steve Powell knows something about her disappearance, and father Chuck Cox said they were relieved by the verdict. He said he hoped the decision would get the family closer to knowing what happened to their daughter.
"It kicks another crutch away from him," Cox said. "The main question is: Where is Susan? Now, perhaps he'll answer it."
