Or just go over the top and have Hank charge the trucks in the middle of the gunfire and knife everyone to death.
 
At this stage Walt slips in and out of Heisenberg like a suit. Jessie watching in joyous rapture at Walt's arrest. Jessie's casual evil beneath the boyish facade. And last but not least Gomez as the epitome of a good sidekick. It is all so heady, like drinking a fine wine.

Yeah, the entire gunfight is a little ridiculous. They are so massively outgunned it's not even funny - we all know how this is going to end, so don't waste several minutes of airtime with nobody getting shot. Also, for some reason everyone is firing rounds into the vehicle where the one person they desperately need (Walt) is sitting.
 
I thought the acting in the final few scenes (right before the gunfight) was some of the best I've ever seen. Probably the impact of the show finally ending (and Hank and Gomez's roles ending even sooner) pushed everyone into a higher level of believability. You can tell that they are entirely spent and elated, but also a little bit apprehensive that it's over.

It was either, have shootout and someone gets killed this episode, have shootout next episode, or start shootout and stop in the middle for drama and end it the next episode, but to do that you have to extend it out via shitty shooting.

I'm sure that's why it was done. I'm not sure I agree with it. I think emotional impact usually hits hardest when you have some time to stew about it afterwards. Next week we're going to have another 40+ minutes of plot to take in before we can really process Hank/Gomez's deaths.
 
A couple of things about the shootout. Had to go back and get some perspective before I made decisions on how hard to believe it was.

First thing I notice is Hank and Gomez can use the SUV as cover from the left car but the right car has them in sights pretty good, especially from the guy camping on the roof. The reason Walt nearly gets shot up too is, of course, because they both duck behind the SUV once the shooting begins. The show slows time down a little bit as Hank starts to fire back, making it seem like he's dodged a zillion bullets at that point but really he hasn't. What adds to the unbelievably though is Gomez seemingly not even moving at first as he initially fires back with the shotgun in real-time. I can partially contribute the crew misses to dust being kicked up from other misses, the dust isn't shown as being *that* thick on the show but at 50 yards with an SUV between them it's not out-of-the-realm to believe it's enough to cause 5-10 seconds of missing from the time Hank and Gomez are fired upon to when they duck behind the SUV. I really do hate scenes like this but I've seen worse.
 
I have to say I enjoyed everything except the unnecessary James Bond-esque PG-13 shootout.

I let my mother shoot a scoped 5.56 rifle for the first time this summer, and even she could hit a target as large as Hank from 50 yards.

If it was pistols only, it would have been much more believable. But even then, odds are someone would have gotten lucky at some point.

It kind of painted the story-line into a corner for me.....both Hank and Gomez have to either be killed or wounded (Gomez most likely first, I assume), or it is basically a cartoon. So why leave the cliff-hanger there?

At least when Gus walked out of the room with the cheesy CGI eye-ball, it was intended to be funny/unrealistic.

The series has been so great that I will be glued to the TV next Sunday, trusting that one of the best shows I have ever watched didn't jump the shark in the home-stretch.

Another theory on the 'police' dialogue:

Hank decides that the bad guys will likely kill DEA agents but that they're less likely to kill police, so he bluffs by saying 'police'.

The bad guys call the bluff by asking for Police badges, and Hank can't think of any response other than to stand there, and the shootout starts.

That's how real life shootouts work too. History is full of actual examples of cops and villains exchanging HUGE volumes of gunfire from very short range with nobody getting hit. I can easily believe that Hank and Gomez didn't go down in the opening volley, that's been proven to happen even if it seems counter-intuitive. I can't believe that they're going to get out of it though. They're out-manned, out-gunned and out of options. Walt in cuffed and it would be too deus ex machina for him to have a hidden handcuff key, so let's assume he's not going to impact the outcome. The only wildcard is Jesse, he hasn't been targeted and is in a vehicle that can easily have the key in the ignition. Maybe he fires up Walt's car, scoops up Hank and Gomez and skedaddles while the Aryan boys stop to get Walt as he's who they want. That leaves Walt in the hands of the Brotherhood beyond the easy reach of the DEA teaching Todd to cook and Jesse/Hank/Gomez alive. Walt does his bit, gets Todd up to speed and disappears to New Hampshire.

That's at least *possible* if unlikely. Far more likely is that Hank and Gomez die, Walt for some odd reason spares Jesse and then disappears to New Hampshire. He comes back to get revenge on Todd and his uncles for killing Hank and decides to whack Lydia too while he's at it.

That's probably the most plausible explanation for how Hank and/or Gomey could survive (although I doubt it).

FWIW Jesse said in an interview that the last scene of the series that was filmed was part of episode 6 (the next episode). He and Walt were inside something together. At this point it seems unlikely that it will be a flashback. Maybe they'll be cooking together one last time, but I can't imagine why they'd need both of them to cook.
 
Gomez dies, Hank gets wounded... And takes Walt hostage. Dialogue in the Walts car as they're getting away. Jesse overhears everything from the back seat. Chooses Walt, kills Hank.


I bet deaths are going to go...

Walt jr kills Jesse.
Skyler kills Marie
Walt kills self

I think that Hank and/or Gomez have already been shot, but the show ended before it was shown. I bet when that scene picks up, someone has been hit....fatally. Also, I think Jesse escapes as you see him slowly opening the car door when the shit goes down.
 
Seems like it took them only about 2-3 seconds to take cover in real-time according to this gif (thanks Reddit) so that makes me feel a bit better.

Yeah, but still - the guy with the aa12 opened up first, I think. sounded like around 6 shots in a second, that's just too much lead to miss completely. Isn't it?

I know, just trying to give Vince benefit of the doubt lol. But also, this crew had recently taken down Declan's crew in what seemed like less than a minute yet were much better armed and probably had a better means of defending themselves, plus on their home turf.
