My team: The Kansas City Chiefs
Positions:
QB: Trent Green, in his 3rd year as a Kansas City Chief, passed for 4039 (2nd in the NFL behind Peyton), 330-523, a 63.1 completion percentage, 24 TD's and 12 INTs, with a passer rating of 92.6. Clearly, we cannot ask much more of Trent. His main target was TE Tony Gonzalez, followed by lackluster WR's Eddie Kennison and Johnnie Morton. He made his first pro bowl of his career in the 03 season. Behind him is Todd Collins (who we call Odd Todd), and our 3rd string is undetermined at this point. We signed Undrafted rookie FA Casey Clausen out of UT, plus we signed UFA Damon Huard. A
RB: Priest Holmes, also in his 3rd year as a Chief, produced a record-breaking season of 27 rushing TD's in a single season. He also rushed for 1420 yards in 320 attempts, and only 1 fumble. All this while he claimed he was never at %100 health for a game, stemming from his 02 hip injury. I'm looking for more production out of him this year, as he has set a new personal goal of 2,500 all purpose yards. Behind him is Derrick Blaylock, a quick young RB who has proved vital to our offense, especially in screen situations, and our 03 #1 Draft pick Larry Johnson.A+
WR: Inconsistent, lackluster, aging. Those are the best 3 words to describe our starting WRs. Eddie Kennison is still very quick, but drops too many balls. From what i've heard in training camp, he and Morton are improving, but will it be enough? Hopefully. They have added Samie Parker in the draft, who is supposed to be very quick. The Chiefs offense is very quick, hopefully these WR's will produce more than they did last year. Dante Hall is also going to become a bigger part in our passing game.C+
TE: Tony Gonzalez. All-Pro, and on his way to another great season. Enough said there. We also re-signed Jason Dunn, a solid run-blocking TE, and we drafted Kris Wilson out of Pitt, who is a versatile TE who can also line up as an H-Back.A+
FB: Tony Richardson. A solid (and now all-pro) run blocking, pass catching FB. He can do it all. I really hope we can win one all for this guy, he has a great attitude and has been with the Chiefs for quite some time now.A
O-Line: Casey Wiegmann under center, a quick, light, and mobile center who is vital to our running game. Willie Roaf at LT, RT is undetermined. It will most likely be John Welbourn , who we got in a trade from Philly this year. Guards, all-pro Will Shields and Brian Waters. A-
DE: Clearly this is a position we struggled at last year. Vonnie Holliday and Eric Hicks just did not produce the kind of numbers, and strength at stopping the run. D+
DT: Many are calling for Ryan Sims, our 02 #1 Draft pick, to have a breakout year. He sat out the 02 year with an injury, and played well in 03. We also drafted Junior Siavii out of Oregon, a 330 lb MONSTER. This position was probably our weakest last year, as we just could not stop the run. D+
LB: I'm not sure on this one. Scott Fujita had a great season last year, and Shawn Barber did decent. Our big weakness was at MLB near the end of the season, as our starting MLB Mike Mazlowski was out with a knee injury, and was replaced by rookie Kawika Mitchell, who played like exactly that...a rookie. I'll put a "?" next to this one, but for now I will give it a C.
CB: It will be interesting to see who will start at CB this year. Eric Warfield had a late season nagged by injuries, but still played well. Dexter McCleon played OK. William Bartee looks lost on every other down, but I am looking forward to seeing how our 03 draft pick Julian Battle will do at CB. Many think our biggest difference here will be the hiring of Gunther Cunningham, who will play more man coverage, and less zone, and less blitzing of our corners (and then dropping LB's into zone..ugh). C-
S: This position is the most solid out of our poor 03 defensive campaign. Greg Wesley is a hard-hitting Ronnie Lott type safety, and Jerome Woods is strong in tackling and coverage, and played well after sitting out the 02 season due to a broken leg, and subsequently making the pro bowl in 03. B
K: Aging Morten Anderson missed one crucial FG in the playoffs. Other than that, he played well for a 42 year old. He doesn't have the distance he once had, but has great accuracy. B-
P: Jason Baker couldn't punt his way out of a paper bag. I'm not sure what we are going to do at this position. We signed another Punter, Rodney Williams, but I don't know much about him. Baker punted well in practice, but choked under pressure. F
KR/PR: Dante Hall. Need I say more? 5 Return TDs in the Regular/Post season. 4 returns for TDs in 4 straight games (NFL Record), and a pro bowl. Look for this guy to break some more ankles this year. A+
As a team, I think the Chiefs have a great shot at making the Super Bowl. The biggest concern is obviously defense, and our answer is Gunther Cunningham.
Divisional wise, I see them winning it with an overall record of 10-6, Divisional record of 4-2, with the Raiders placing 2nd, Broncos 3rd, and San Diego 4th.
