Brake checking a cop

I don't know why people want to piss cops off just because. The van driver will get a ticket for sure.

EDIT:
A better action for the cop would have been to maintain a respectful distance and flash his police lights briefly to instruct the van driver to pull over to the right. As the van driver pulled over, the cop could have driven past with no aggressive behavior from anyone involved.

He did it says:

The cop however was not amused so he flashed his lights to the van several times

He did it says:

I missed that. Thank you. That changes my opinion and it is good the cop pulled him over. This means the van driver was unaware of his surroundings and a potential danger to other drivers.

Sorry about that, I was doing other things and only half-watched the video.

Van was very much aware. You can also see the lights in the back of his doors from the cop dipping his high beams.

Van thought he was going to prove something to even a cop or missed the blues on the roof.

Stupid fuckers are born every minutes, which explains their presence in this thread. I bet when they're not trolling here, they're probably out protesting the income inequality of the rich and themselves, and break mom and pop's shop windows to make a point to the "man". And that they aligned themselves to communism AND libertarian, at the same time. Some of them probably drive vans, just like the ones in the video

Tell me I'm wrong.

Oh, and the people that block the left lane should be castrated (I couldn't care less of your sex).

shoudl have pulled him over the minute he found him traveling in the left lane not actively passing someone

hmmm...

i just drove about 150~ miles.... probably 100 of them in the leftmost lane.

here the only lanes reserved for anything are the HOV lanes. everything else is fair game for everyone but the big trucks.

If you are from California, you are officially dubbed another ignorant fool:

VEHICLE CODE
SECTION 21650-21664

21654. (a) Notwithstanding the prima facie speed limits, any
vehicle proceeding upon a highway at a speed less than the normal
speed of traffic moving in the same direction at such time shall be
driven in the right-hand lane for traffic or as close as practicable
to the right-hand edge or curb, except when overtaking and passing
another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing
for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or
driveway.
(b) If a vehicle is being driven at a speed less than the normal
speed of traffic moving in the same direction at such time, and is
not being driven in the right-hand lane for traffic or as close as
practicable to the right-hand edge or curb, it shall constitute prima
facie evidence that the driver is operating the vehicle in violation
of subdivision (a) of this section.
(c) The Department of Transportation, with respect to state
highways, and local authorities, with respect to highways under their
jurisdiction, may place and maintain upon highways official signs
directing slow-moving traffic to use the right-hand traffic lane
except when overtaking and passing another vehicle or preparing for a
left turn.

no idea in NY/NJ, but here in FL, cops WILL pull you over for aggressive driving/road-rage incidents. There are numbers all over the highway for you to report someone being an asshole.

Brake checking is idiotic and can easily cause a major accident. Brake checking in the rain is exponentially more idiotic. Brake checking a cop in the rain... well, lets just say don't hold your breath on MENSA calling.

I seriously hate you and your ilk.

In agreement with SSSnail: Off with your balls.

There are few things more annoying in life than the notion police can do whatever they want.

One thing that is more annoying, and happens much more frequently, is when people drive like dumbasses. The way that van was being driven definitely qualifies. I am not automatically judgmental of LEO so I don't care if it was a cop behind him or a Yugo, if someone obviously wants to pass and you cruise/camp the left lane, you are a douche, plain and simple. Probably should be noted that excessive braking on divided/controlled access highways is what causes what I call "rubber band traffic jam" from the domino effect of people overbraking down the line. Could go on a whole rant about how people drive on interstates now that I drive them so much more.

They should make a PSA when you get your license that there is no "score card" for how many times you are passed or pass others, YIELD THE FUCKING LEFT LANE PEOPLE! It just forces people to do the next most irritating thing, passing on the right.

Assuming this is what happened, is that illegal?

It has been my experience that traffic tickets work entirely differently than any other kind of law. The cop could write you a ticket for breathing with your mouth open, and just maybe if your lucky you will get the chance to pay court costs and try to prove that's not a crime. Traffic tickets mean guilty until a judge decides you have the chance to maybe be innocent.

That said, that guy deserved a ticket.

I've always wanted to see what would happen if I requested a trial by jury for speeding. It is allowed in my state and you would think if everyone did that it would bankrupt the state.

Whenever I am forced to pass on the right (or worse, weave through a few lanes of traffic on the right, since people in the left lanes are driving like oblivious assholes) I am muttering many self-loathing comments, and if I directly pass any moron in the left lane, I make a point to look in their vehicle and continue blabbering with the most hateful look I can. I usually hope at least 1:10 gets the point and learns something.

I had someone enter my blindspot on my right in-between the time it took me to pass a slow moron on the left (new lane opened up right at that point) and the time it took to get back into the now middle lane. I had to stay on the left.

Right-side passing introduces too many potential hazards because of issues, and I cannot stand it and absolutely hate myself every time I do - but if I see opportunities, I will not be held up just because a handful of morons are oblivious to the laws and to the traffic behind them.

I don't get the mentality of the type of person that will drive in the left hand lane when the right is clear.

what's the point? you aren't proving anything. I do wish cops would just pull your ass over. you are more dangerous then the idiot doing 20 mph over the speed limit.

Traffic tickets do not work that way.

If it's not in the lawbooks, it cannot be written on a ticket. Plain and simple. You can only be fined for breaking the law and/or failing to adhere to certain protocols and policies regarding vehicular use.
Say, any of the thousand different lightbulbs on your vehicle has burnt out; something is sticking too far out from vehicle with no visible warning proclaiming such; you are missing a sticker on your license plate; you are in the wrong lane based on various factors.

Granted, in thinking of that, I am now reminded that you CAN be ticketed for "following too close based upon local conditions." However, there are only a few of a similar nature that are based on a cop's judgment, as opposed to a by-the-book yes/no situation.

cop was probably running his plates, and the van was travelling way too slow, if another car, let alone a cop came that close to me, i'd move over for clearly being too slow in the left lane.

I know how the law works, but real life tends to work differently.

I have been ticketed for 'driving unsafe for conditions' without breaking the speed limit simply because the cop needed a reason for why he pulled me over. (The real reason was it was 2am, they had just busted a house party of teenagers and thought I was one of them, I was doing 25 in a 25 in a light snow).

I do it often*.

The * is to denote that there's a reason - generally speaking the right lane is usually in far worse condition than the left lane. Mind you, I haven't lived in New York for about 4 years now, but winter sucks, and spring is actually even worse. Winters generally tear up the roads in NY, which is why there's actually only two seasons up there - Winter and Construction Season.

Thing is, just about any state I've driven in has similar issues - the difference being the farther south you go, the less often the roads are resurfaced. That means a lot of times pretty significant ruts in the road simply from travel, all the way to huge potholes. At best, they fill the potholes every year, but the surface is still horrible to drive on until they do a full resurface. The left lane is usually in far better condition.

Another thing is the pitch - down south with the generally heavier rain, the pitch of the right lane is far steeper than that of the left lane to facilitate water runoff. At these points I prefer to be in the left lane because I of a combination of the above - the water runs off to the right lane and usually pools in the ruts that have been left making controlling a vehicle in those lanes a far greater challenge, even at low speeds.

The main difference with me - I will move over if I know I'm not travelling at speed and it's safe to do so. I don't do it to be an asshole... I do it for my own safety.
