Brainteaser I got at an interview today..

It's really simple if you just think it out on your own without any pressure of any sort..but at the end of a long interview and your interviewer staring you down forcing you to think your thoughts aloud knowing this is a big part of it it's just a tad bit more difficult.

The instructions are a lot simpler than this, but here it is in its entire form as given:

A band has a concert that starts in 17 minutes and all band members must cross a bridge to get there.

All four members begin on the same side of the bridge.

You must organize htem so that htye all cross to the other side in time.

It is night. There is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can cross at one time.

Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them.

The flashlight must be walked back and forth, it cannot be thrown, etc.

Each band member walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower man's pace.

Member 1: - takes 1 minute to cross
Member 2: - takes 2 minutes to cross
Member 3: - takes 5 minutes to cross
Member 4: - takes 10 minutes to cross

For example, if Member 1 and Member 4 walk across first, 10 minutes have elapseed when they get to the other side of the bridge.

If member 4 then returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes have elapsed and you have failed this mission.

It took me about 6 minutes to read/solve this, but at the time it felt like an eternity.

1 and 2 cross (2 total minutes)
2 comes back (4 total minutes)
5 and 10 cross (14 total minutes)
1 comes back (15 total minutes)
1 and 2 cross (17 total minutes)

Piece of cake.

What if you have to go under the bridge but the bridge doesn't open and you can't stop the ship?!

If it happens on the Thames river then the song they'll be singing should be very familiar. 😉
