Hi All,

To give a basic background as to why I ask what I ask: I have been feeling really off for a while. I do not know for a fact if this has anything to do with brain chemistry or nutrition, but it is certainly different from when I was able to operate at my peak.

The main symptoms are that I am forgetful, aloof, generally uninterested in things, and not able to build rapport or enjoy hobbies.

I can read a book and one hundred pages later, forget events that have happened. I forget events that I set up for myself (schedule). I am not able to be interested and build rapport are similar symptoms. I cannot talk to people anymore since I stopped being curious as to what they have to say. Even if I remember to ask questions, I do not remember the answers moments after they are provided. Lastly, I cannot seem to form new hobbies since they do not stay with me. For instance, if I start a new game that is super exciting, the next day I forget to go back to it.

This is a major toll on my life and I’m wonder what is happening that I feel symptoms that cause me to be in constant auto pilot.

Could this be a nutritional thing? I do eat mostly processed foods and vitamins to fill in on the missing parts (Fish oil, magnesium, zinc, amino acids, grape extract). I took piracetam a little while back but it seemed to be a temporary boost. What should I be eating to restore my brain health? It’s not cognition that I have problems with but rather focus.

While I can't say it isn't nutrition based, I would lean more towards depression or possibly a thyroid issue. I'd talk with a doctor and have your levels checked as well as discuss a few of your symptoms with them.
 
Sounds exactly the same problem I had when I had sleeping problems. Do you stay up late? Have any trouble falling asleep? Not get enough sleep?

This was my thought too.

Caffeine is supposed to be a proven brain food (or is it just coffee?). It makes you think better. Oh, the balmer beer thing is also kinda proven with a shitty study. Having a few beers makes you actually think better (atleast if you write software for a living)

It is funny there is a Balmer level of drunken coding, as Steve Balmer was never a coder. He was always business management. Perhaps, the real level is when you get so drunk simply facerolling produces a program.
 
Nutrition definitely has an effect on brain health.

Also alcohol and caffeine both affect the brain in different ways. One lends more to creativity and the other production. Both have fine lines that if crossed will lead to detrimental affects on both.

I thought this was normal. I'm pretty much the same way, forgetful and have a hard time remembering shit that I don't consider important even some stuff I would like to remember I forget about.
 
well you really should that its all about how the body absorb foods, and you might eat well, yet, other processes running in your body, not necessarily consume what you ate in the right way. i would advise first to see professional, run some test to stimulate your brain, check its reactions. and if you do go on supplement, make sure whats in it, make it non gmo as possible, for you body

Sounds like you are over 25 and likely don't get enough sleep. Also you talk about nutrition which is great and all, but do you exercise? Eating good food and exercising will help with the sleep situation.

Java exercises and has a 6 pack now.

I'm not sure if he sleeps enough? Java also intermittent fasting as well. I'd try having some food for breakfast and see how you get on. I know that when I'm hungry my concentration is on point.

also try:
choline - citicoline or Alpha-GPC variety
high DHA formula fish oil
alpha-lipoic acid / other antioxidants
minerals like magnesium, potassium, zinc, selenium

I have a book on brain nutrition.

creatine is supposed to be some sort of brain nutrient

at least according to razib and considering how smart he is i will consider it true
 
start eating lots more fruits and veggies, especially fruits. research indicates that it might help in whatever holistic approach you take.

my own anecdotal experience shows this to be true as well. whenever i pound in the fruits, especially berries, on a daily basis for over a week, I find myself overall more jovial and happy. If I'm dealing with crappy food an lacking the fruits and veggies because I'm just eating breads, meats, and other processed junks, I feel like I want to QQ more, and get more irritable in general.
