anyone got figure for how many applicants with perfect score got rejected by haravrd?
1580 is not good enough to get her in harvard, but she has a good start. btw, SAT format will change a few years later.

my gramma sucks because it is not needed for SAT. btw, I only got 490 on verbal. how about you study 4 years of my language(chinese) and take the SAT2 for? 😛

sorry for acting an asshat again. congratz to you sis!

1580 is plenty to get her into an Ivy League with a good GPA, extracurriculars, and the like.

it's amazing how picky some schools are actually. I had a friend in high school who had a 1480 SAT, graduated with over a 4.0, multiple extra curriculars including soccer team and student government, and who's older brother had graduated MIT so he was a legacy, he didn't even get accepted to the school. So I couldn't tell you what some of these schools want. Maybe they want you do bleed actual blue blood or something.

I don't really think so. at least not with harvard, yale, or MIT. depends what ivy she is aiming for(or colleges on par with ivy).
GPA comes first, expect to take about 5 AP classes and score all 5.0 on them
good SAT score
massive extracurriculars
community service (100 hours+)
race also plays a role here, if you are black or hispanic, go out and chill, just maintain a 3.5gpa and you can go to ANY college you want.

it is a game, the main key is apply as many as possible. my friend applied to ALL ivy and got accepted to two. Yale and columbia(his father teaches at columbia).
his achievement:
valedictorian in my school
1520 SAT
5 AP classes(bio, chem, physics, stats, calc BC) and all scored 5.0
hundreds of community services. also extracirrulars.

Your friend is lame and so are you. Enough thread hijacking. Congrats to GoPunk on having a smart sister.

congrats...I think...wait, do you actually want your sister to be a huge nerd too? =p

It's an impressive score for 99% of the high schools out there =) So don't let anybody else know or they'll all think your sister's a huge dork! =p

If she goes to a dork high school then it's OK cuz it just seeds her as one of the uber dorks 😉

Or was this the 'P'SAT?

That's a good question. Is this for one of the precollege summer programs that admits based on SAT and, if so, is she attending?

Actually, what really determines what you need to get in is a lot more complicated than that...it all depends on your competition actually...if you go to a school where everybody else is pulling 1580's without blinking, and there's another 200 people with GPAs like yours(even though yours is a 3.9) you're gonna have a hard time competing. Whereas if you're the only person at your school to have a score in the 1500's, and also valedictorian because you were the only uber dork there, it becomes a LOT easier since you'd be like the only realistic candidate from your high school. Colleges can't accept 200 people all from one high school for obvious reasons, so sometimes it's to your advantage to go to a crappy high school and be king, rather than somewhere in the middle in a really really hard high school.

Also, that 5 AP classes thing is also dependent on your high school and how challenging the non-AP classes were anyway. And no, you do not need to score 5.0 on all of them, in fact the colleges don't even SEE your AP scores unless you want to transfer the credits! Otherwise it's just an AP course on your transcipt and the grade for that class that counts. Heck, you don't even have to TAKE the AP test if you don't want to.

But yeah race is also a huge card, but no, you cannot go to ANY college you want lol. It helps a lot though =p

Maybe she skipped a few grades? Not really unbelievable if she's uber smart...there's a girl at my college who's 16 and can qualify for junior standing if she wanted to...but chooses to retain freshman standing.

Only reason I know is cuz I was taking Anatomy, which is usually taken only by Juniors and Seniors and during a laboratory class it came out in conversation...she made me feel really really dumb =(

I think the SATs are usually taken in a specific grade and thus if you skipped grades you could be whatever age you want.

Sad thing is that that 16 year old girl isn't even the only girl I know at my school who is younger than me but has more credits. Of course the other girl(my roomie's girlfriend) is only a year younger than me =p and actually did reclassify for junior standing(for monetary reasons, it's cheaper to attend college for only 3 years...she actually transferred in too, so she only pays our insane tuition for two years).

Man I feel stupid now.

That's quite an achievement, even though I don't think the SAT's are a good measure of actual intelligence. I got a 1280 myself, but honestly I don't really care if I know all those verbal questions that I missed. I'm not growing up to be an English teacher and very rarely do I make some sort of grammatical mistake while talking to someone in real life. I'm content with that as it is

Yeah I don't think its an accurate measure of intelligence either. I got a 1360 (680 on both math and english sections) but took it on a Saturday morning and was crazy hung over from partying too hard the night before, only had 2 hours of sleep... ah the priorities of youth... 😀 But I hardly consider myself more intelligent than the average person, just good at standardized tests.

It's extremely funny that the only ones who are saying the SAT isn't a a measure of intelligence didn't do exceptionally well on the SAT.

Also, why do people always preface their underachievements by saying, "But I took it drunk, high, asleep, upside down"? Is that the excuses people make to themselves so that they feel better about not doing as well as they wished?

btw, it is nothing to brag about. how about if your sister can make 3 perfect score on GRE when she is 17?

LOL I bet. When you learn English you can tell us all about your teacher's son. 1580 is an EXCELLENT score.

wow congrats to her!

i cant remember what i got on my SAT. it was like 10 years ago that i took those dumb test. probably something like 200 or so! had to settle for a crappy college like RIT>
