Yeah, that's foolish. They're going to want information from all types of PCs. They already know an i7 920 will run this thing at max or near-max.

You are probably right, but if you go to your account page on bnet and download the system spec utility, it literally says that beta invites are determined by system specs.

I know I should have registered a CD key with my Pentium 4 2.0Ghz and Radeon 9800 Pro build. If I oc'd that to 2.4 I'd have minimum all set. Damn!

Just watched several more.
Same thing. He only moves up the tech tree when he feels like making the game last longer. But memorizing the most efficient procedure and executing it quickly seems to be the main key to success. I saw a Protoss big bot that looked like it came from Supreme Commander, and a huge Protoss mothership that probably cost a massive amount of materials. Also saw the Terran battleship.

Seems like these guys have to agree in advance to not rush each other if they wanna build up their tech tree. Otherwise spamming with basic units is the norm.

from what i've seen in pro-gaming for the original starcraft, rushing early is a huge gamble. you can win big, but if the enemy defends, you're SOL because you're so very far behind economically.

so yeah, most times people just do some scouting, light harassment, etc till they can get decent tech.

Fenixgoon is right. I just won a match against a decent Protoss player because he rushed, I defended (bunker + scv repair FTW) and he kept sending waves. Didn't find my exp though, so I massed vikings and took out his nexus in 7 seconds...

Anyone not using their beta code who'd be interested in giving a huge Starcraft fan their key? If you want an idea of who I am, google "jesuscraft starcraft" "american invitational" etc. to see my work done in the community.

FWIW StepUp, I did not receive a key - they linked one in my BNET account for me.

Some people didn't get an email. They had to check their managed games list on their own accord.

The beauty of strategy games is that they are ever-evolving. You are watching a bunch of no names who play at a very basic level. You are also witnessing the birth of the game. Check back in no less than a month, and there will be players pulling off spectacular tactical and unorthodox moves that will leave you scratching your head in real time, but later lamenting the fact that you didn't think of it first... especially if you're on the losing end!

Maybe, but think of the tons of people out there who are on lousy rigs and dont know it, steam hardware survey says theres quite a few on 6600-8600 hardware, and theyre just the ones who use steam.

I think the amount of people cancels out the fact they might be looking for lower spec systems, so a higher spec one has just as good a chance IMO because theres less of them. Not everybodys rockin an i7 etc.

Beta invites ARE determined by system specs, but people with high powered systems don't have priority over somebody with a system that's 5 years old. They want to take the largest possible spread of hardware to see if any stability issues exist with different configurations. Certain configurations that are popular or they're more interested in might get a slightly heavier weight, but overall I'd suspect that amount of people in each system performance range is approximately equal.

Was there an email as well letting you know you're in?

I received it about 6 hours after I had been told to check my BNET account. So I heard about it from Ars Technica first.

Alright, I just watched some videos from replays in 720p on youtube and was much more impressed (of course it had been edited to only show the cool shit). The game looks great and will probably be on my to-get list this year. I'll make time for homework and studying somewhere else.

Incidentally, those streaming games look like shit. I wont bother again unless someone figures out how to do them in at least 480p without massive compression.

You know what?
Fuck it. I dont even want the game. I just want the engine so I can watch replays.

We moved and won't have cable until the first of next month thanks to Comcast, so I can't even check my personal email & don't know if I got in. Oh well....life goes on.

Theres literally about a million places in America you can check your personal email.
Your home computer is only one of them.

I can't help thinking "I shouldn't have updated my system specs for the beta app." (From an i7/920 to an i7/950, so it probably wouldn't have helped if I hadn't done it, but still.)
