Boycott Origin

First off, Origin is buggy crap. I tried to download my BF:BC2 the other day and, being on a slow connection that Origin refused to even max out, it took me 2.5 days straight downloading to reach 100%. The download just hung at 100%, after restarting Origin it proceeded to do an update, and when I got back in the game was at 0% again. I lost everything, even though I had specifically checked off the option in settings to save my downloads.

Anyway, I'm not gonna whine... I'll buy the game again next time Steam has it on sale. Steam is superior in every way. I wish everyone would just boycott Origin altogether. Especially considering that they are gonna try to force their service on us by not allowing BF3 on Steam. I would urge everyone to buy the game in the retail box and give a big FU to Origin.

My question is, if I buy BF3 in the retail box, can EA still force me to use Origin to play the game online?

You already voted to keep it going by purchasing shit from them. If they've been making money from it, they won't quit now.
Just like micro-transactions. If they even make $1 from it, they'll milk the shit out of.
Good job. Way to show them. Asshole.

I'll use Origin when I get the physical Collector's Edition of Mass Effect 3, so I can download and play it without the disc, and maybe if I ever get The Old Republic since it's an Origin exclusive download. Otherwise I won't use it.

I bought the game last year from EA store. That's the last money they'll be getting from me and from now on I'll be getting my EA games from torrents.

2.5 days? Wow, thats like phone modem speed from the old days.

Nah, that's 512 mbit, like a slow dsl connection. The problem is that, while my connection is capable of 60-70KB/s, Origin was only giving me 30-40.

I have had zero issues with Origin and Bad Company 2 downloaded really fast for me every time. Steam on the other hand does not have dl speeds worth a crap half the time. yesterday Steam was only using about 15-20% of my connection speed and late at night is the only time it actually will give me decent dl speeds.

Origin just has some shitty policies in their EULA. Like they only guarantee downloads for one year and can cancel your account if you don't log into it for 2 years.

Granted, I'm sure other digital services might have something similar to these or one of them to cover their own asses, the big difference though is, EA has a shitty track record and has no problem throwing customers under the bus to save/make a buck.

please show me where it says it can only be downloaded for one year. AFAIK that policy was for 2-3 years and even that restriction was removed with Origin.

Whenever I hear someone claiming or pushing to boycott I picture that Modern Warfare boycott screen shot, where almost everyone who "boycotted" was playing it.

I won't be happy if Origin turns out to be like Steam where you have to have the service running in order to play the games downloaded through it, but that's not the case right now. I bought BC2 direct from EA using their EA Download manager which eventually turned into Origin. The only times I ever fired up either program was to download/install BC2, of which I started and updated from shortcuts to exes in the installed game folder.

In some cases that makes Origin even better than Steam.

I'm sure the thing that most gamers don't like about this situation is that they've already sold themselves to Steam and thus they don't like the idea of another competitor infringing on that. What we have to realize is that the thing that turns us off to the competitors, is the very thing Steam was first to be guilty of.

Instead of boycotting Origin we should be pressuring Valve to get their act together to either fix what they've broken and/or wake up and fight back.

please show me where it says it can only be downloaded for one year. AFAIK that policy was for 2-3 years and even that restriction was removed with Origin.

I think you misread what he wrote. He claimed the EA will only guarantee downloads for 1 year, that's not to say the downloads for most/all games will be immediately unavailable to you after 365 days from purchase, all that means is that EA will have the ability to remove that game

I do not think they have a policy like that any longer. at one time it was maybe a year and then you had to pay extra to guarantee it would be there for you to dl after that. then it was some loose 2-3 year policy when I got BC 2 through them a year or so ago. now supposedly with Origin there is no cut off where you will lose the ability to dl a game through them. again if someone knows different then please share that official info.

How do you boycott a service that is free? They have your money, they don't care what you use to play it. You only need origin to initially install then you don't have to run it again. That's beside the fact that when I used origin my downloads were just as fast as steam.

I never go to EA.com or any of their other sites, never used Origin, never bought anything from the EA site or their service, and never, ever will. If Activision had a similar service I would say the same thing about them.

Fuck both companies.

toyota - http://support.ea.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5291/~/origin-frequently-asked-questions

Q: Will my game download ever expire?
A: Digital download rights remain available for at least one year after purchase. Origin typically doesn’t retire games, and we’ve only retired around 10 of the 150 games we sell, and these have generally been because of the expiration of licensing rights. If you come across an issue, simply contact Origin Help and we'll reconfigure things for you.

The fact EA gives you any guaranteed time period to play your games after you purchase them is more than what's promised with Steam. Valve's subscriber agreement says they can cancel your subscriptions to any of your games at any time. A lot of other download services have similar terms.

Personally, I tried Origin the other day and it's not bad. Navigation is a little confusing though.

I'm not a big fan of the all-in one clients anymore. I think Steam has gotten a little bloated. You've got Steam + server browser + im client + overlay.

The problem with the IM client is it's a closed system. If you use something else like raptr you can log in using an all in one client so you can be on raptr, aim, facebook chat + whatever.

The overlay is nice when it works, but most of the time it doesn't. In bad company 2 it works the first time you use it but it just breaks afterwards. The in-game browser is terrible. They seriously need to update that thing.

The origin software is basically copying the Steam client, so now you've got 2 closed IM systems. An extra overlay. More bloat.

BF3 is on my must buy list so I'm boycotting your boycott.

Not getting into the other issues but, Steam was a buggy POS when it first launched too...
