The family will end up with the money regardless.

Obviously there was a plan behind this; to get money to change hands without anyone suspecting anything. It was probably assumed that the person who won the auction was the intended receiver (hey, it could be money paid for services rendered). They won't file a claim because it brings about a lot of heat.

Although..

Thinking about it more...

They, obviously, know your address. So, if it was gotten through illegal activities.. It would kinda suck to have someone come beat your door down.

So.. After I shat myself, I would move. :D

There's a lot of information that would be traced (and probably is being done so now) through eBay and the transaction.

Yeah, now that they've gone to the authorities. If it was really illegal money, the owner wouldn't contact the authorities looking for it, they would come looking for you.. assuming they even cared about it.

I'd move. ;) lol

Anyone who can afford to risk sending $90k anonymously to an unknown target without certainty can surely get over it. There would have to be something big behind this. ;)

They did the right thing and will end up with the money.

Lots of places take cash, no questions asked. Putting money into a bank like that is asking to be caught.

Okay lets try scenario 2 then

You launder the money, then one night a few months later you are lying asleep in bed when three guys break into your bedroom, and threaten to kill you until you give them the money. You tell them what you did. They kill you.

Replace "launder the money" with "turn the money into the police"

Why is one a less killable offense than the other?

If you turn it in to the police, they need to keep you alive until you get the money after no one claims it. That buys you some time.......to flee to Mexico!

Means nothing. Now that the police are involved, and the people know that they are, the kid is untouchable unless they want to draw more attention.

There is no other option that what he did.

I would definitely have reported it to the police. The guys that sent it also just sent a PS2 to the kids' house, so obviously they know where he lives. If he'd just kept it, or worse, spent it, and then two big bald guys come knocking asking where the money is, they whole family is screwed. They're much more likely to come after the family if they think they still have the money, than to just go kill them as revenge.

I'd keep the money, sell my house, and move to another country and take it easy for a year or two, then come back.

Maybe they should give the PS2 to some drug sniffing dogs for a once over. Who, other than old people and drug dealers, have that much cash on hand in a box... Or was this PS2 from an "he/she died, so I'm getting rid of the memories"?

If no one comes forward to claim the money, the family may be able to apply to get it back after that date. Until then, the Police, with the cooperation of eBay, will keep looking for the owner.

he has a chance if they dont claim it!
imo, I would have left some GREAT feedback and kept the cash.

definetly drug dealers who stashed a good amount of money in the ps2 without telling the owner. someone they knew sold the stupid thing on ebay and now they are out 90 large. I def would NOT have told the authorities, moved to a new place, kept the money hidden somewhere in the new house, and buy a few things for myself. Or, just hit a casino with 90 large, gamble a little bit and cash out = laundered money :p
