I don't think it's that dumb actually. It's HIGHLY likely the kid knew what he was doing and took a bag of sugar soley to pass off as drugs to his friends to make him look cool.

Edit: I don't think he should be charged with a felony, but punishment by the school is fine by me.

yea. felony is way too much

hehe ya.

a felony is too much. the police shouldn't be even involved. do they live in some sort of suburb where nothing exciting happens?

Good lord this country is doomed! Straight from the article linked:
Two other boys asked if the bag contained cocaine after he showed it to them in the bathroom Wednesday morning, the boy's mother said.

He joked that it was cocaine, before telling them, "just kidding," she said.

I might go for detention if he was running around the school going "hey look at this bag of toot I have" but based on what was in the linked story I still think the common sense thing to do would be to take it from him, do some type of in school discipline, and send him back to class.

1. You can't just break a rule and say "just kidding" and have it be like it never happened.
2. There's a lot about this story that we don't know. Like how believable his science experiment story is. They don't give any details, but it's not sounding too believable to me. And if the science experiment story is not believable, then the next logical conclusion given the kid's actions is that he brought the sugar to school for the specific purpose of pretending it was cocaine. If that is the case, then yes he deserves some punishment. Criminal charges are too much, 10 days suspension is too much.

You really just disqualified your complete dissertation with your first sentence in #2. "There's a lot about this story that we don't know." So, despite the fact that you know nothing other than what's reported, you make a LOT of negative assumptions aobut it.

Sorry your world is just so black and white....must be a rather miserable world to live in without all the other shades available to others.

And, btw, I guess you've never, ever joked about something, right? Never made the dumb joke that you had alcohol when you just had water or the like, esp. at the age of 12..........and he's 12, not 32, an age that still has difficulty completely comprehending all the nuances of all the abstractions that some jokes carry with them.

Cannnot give the kid the beneift of any doubt, but instead instantly come down on the kid as totally wrong and completely deserving of a felony conviction at the age of 12..........good go!!!!

...
Aurora police arrested the boy after a custodian at the school reported the boy's comments.

Ya think the custodian was watching in addition to listening?

And yes it's obvious the kid is a moron and it wasn't for science class, but there's no reason to involve the law.

Well I did something similar back in the 70s in elementary school.

told people a small bag of sugar was "angel dust"

talk about being in trouble...they had the cops and everybody grilling my butt. suspended for a week. no arrests, although they kept hammering "who's your supplier? where did you get it from?"

no bull.

-edit- the schools take that stuff VERY seriously.

I feel bad for kids in school these days. I remember when I was in high school a couple of my friends got busted drinking vodka in class. They got suspended for like three days or so and I'm pretty sure that was the end of it.

BS. A simple taste test would have done the trick.
In this age of terrorism and anthrax, nobody is going to do a bump of or rub any unidentified white powder on their gumbs.

That being said, the kid knew he had a bag of what looked like cocaine and that said the definitely school overreacted.

Cops only taste suspected drugs in the movies. Never in real life.

It is because of all the litigation that the schools are scared of facing. Take away or at least revise the litigation process to weed out unneccessary litigation and your problem is solved. This is the same stuff as what was posted last week about the 6 year old suspended for Sexual Harassment. Schools are scared if they don't take drastic measures the parents will sue.

Oh I know, but even more so now.

The SRO of that school had to have had a field drug test kid in his cruiser or someone could have been called over who did.

I made no assumptions. I qualified everything with ifs.

Sorry your world is just so black and white....must be a rather miserable world to live in without all the other shades available to others.

Don't be a patronizing asshole.

No, I didn't. It's not funny. 😕 I did get in trouble for a lot of other stupid stuff in school, and each time I accepted my punishment. I've repeatedly stated that the punishment is too harsh, by the way.

Cannnot give the kid the beneift of any doubt, but instead instantly come down on the kid as totally wrong and completely deserving of a felony conviction at the age of 12..........good go!!!!

Are you illiterate?

Should he be suspended: yes.
Should he be charged with a crime: no

I mean if the teacher asked him to bring in sugar for project and he get charged with felony for it that is entrapment if you ask me.

Was it actually in the Powdered Sugar bag that you buy it frmo at the store or did he have it wrapped up in a little baggie?
did we get an answer to this question?

i am reserving my judgement until so, because how the "powdered sugar"
is presented makes a hella difference.

Wait... so, some kid puts powdered sugar in a baggie and shows it to his friend, saying it is cocaine. the janitor overhears and reports him. the kid then says he wanted to ask his science teacher about an experiment... that about right?

now the mom, instead of slapping the kid in the ass for doing something so stupid is blaming the school?

if the kid was aware that this would be a federal crime, then i dont feel sorry for him. 6th graders are not as innocent as they used to be and i doubt this kid had no idea this would land his ass in a world of trouble.

My opinion is that charging him with a federal crime is a bit OTT, but he should not skate without any punishment.

🙂

Felony != federal... but yeah, pretty much.

Modified your summary to include what I feel is being overlooked important info that was in the linked article. The article does not say whether the custodian reported that part of the conversation.

Just because you touched off some idiot's "war on drugs" buzzer doesn't mean you did anything wrong. Sometimes people are so sensitized to something that they respond purely in knee-jerk reactions without thinking. Sort of like how everything was about "communism" in the 60's and "terrorism" today. When you're fighting against these invisible enemies, it almost gives someone a blank check to do something that they otherwise couldn't do.

Now when a poorly-worded bill needs to pass, or a bill that's full of pork needs to pass, it's all about "saving the children" and "stopping terrorism". People seem to fall for this crap forever.

I hope the kid and his lawyer destroys the school's administrators in court.

We're winin' the war on drugs! America fvck yeah!!

But then again, its much easier to go after a 12 year old kid with powdered sugar than a real dope dealer.

Punishment for what? I fail to see what he did wrong. He brought a bag of powdered sugar to school, which is perfectly legal and safe.

They'd be rotting in prison for that right now.

All of this is convincing me to home school.... idiot administrators and this incident didn't even happen in a red state!
