Nonsense. At most they should have done nothing more than take it from him and send him on his way once they determined there was nothing more than confectioners sugar in the baggie. Oh wait I forget this is 0 tolerance America circa 2006 where common sense is NEVER invoked. :|

Common sense dictates that if you want to avoid getting in trouble, you follow the rules in school. If bringing a "look-alike drug" to school is against the rules, yeah he deserves to suffer the consequences. It's not like he was suspended for having sugar, he was suspended for saying it was cocaine. If he brought it to lunch and put it on his french toast he wouldn't have gotten in trouble.

I'd love to know what the science experiment was supposed to be.

Suspend the kid for 10 days for bringing a look alike drug and then joking about being cocaine. That's sounds pretty fair. Charging a 12 year with a felony for something like this is going too far.

Next thing you know, kids will be arrested for going to school -- interacting with other children might cause them to do drugs!!!

in my entire time at different schools, they all mentioned that you shouldn't brings actual drugs in, they made no mention of look alike drugs

the water and vodka analogy is a perfect example, infact they should ban orange juice and sunny delight, since they may be making screw drivers

Good lord this country is doomed! Straight from the article linked:
Two other boys asked if the bag contained cocaine after he showed it to them in the bathroom Wednesday morning, the boy's mother said.

He joked that it was cocaine, before telling them, "just kidding," she said.

I might go for detention if he was running around the school going "hey look at this bag of toot I have" but based on what was in the linked story I still think the common sense thing to do would be to take it from him, do some type of in school discipline, and send him back to class.

maybe the kid wanted to do the sugar and sulfuric acid experiment.

I don't think it's that dumb actually. It's HIGHLY likely the kid knew what he was doing and took a bag of sugar soley to pass off as drugs to his friends to make him look cool. Even still, it's a little crazy to get all bent over.

Yeah, I agree. At my school he probably would have gotten detention for a week or so and that would have been the end of it.

obviously confectionery racism.

if the kid brought parsely and had it in a bag waving it around the bathroom everyone would be pointing and laughing at his dumb ass.

1. You can't just break a rule and say "just kidding" and have it be like it never happened.
2. There's a lot about this story that we don't know. Like how believable his science experiment story is. They don't give any details, but it's not sounding too believable to me. And if the science experiment story is not believable, then the next logical conclusion given the kid's actions is that he brought the sugar to school for the specific purpose of pretending it was cocaine. If that is the case, then yes he deserves some punishment. Criminal charges are too much, 10 days suspension is too much.

Yep.

you all are fvcking pathetic if you think the kid should be charged with a felony. detention, suspension ... yah i could see that ... a felony? hell no.

Uh, did you read the post? They are saying that they don't believe his story, but that it should have school related punishment, not criminal punishment.

So? He's 12. A felony???

The war on drugs is absurd... and this is just further proof of that.

(thumping fist on table)

We must have ZERO TOLERANCE with drugs! The war on drugs must continue! First it's powdered sugar then it's communism and/or terrorism!

can't say i'm surprised, if you flash a toy gun at someone and THEY think its real and report it, you can get charged.

Sad to hear about this, looks like common sense has gone down the drain. Maybe I'll pay the school a visit or email them. :disgust:

Great, all he needs is a bunch of teenage kids calling to harrass him and signing his e-mail address up for porn.

Boy charged with felony for carrying sugar

East Aurora School District officials declined to comment on the case, citing privacy issues.

I do believe that is code-speak for "We really screwed this one up bad, but if we just keep our heads in the sand maybe no one will notice and they won't be able to find us then they try to serve the subpoena."

This would be reason #1572 why I don't live in the lower 48. I agree the kid should face some kind of minimal scholastic dicipline for what he did but to place him at risk for a felony? Gimmie a break.

Edit: I don't think he should be charged with a felony, but punishment by the school is fine by me.

I'm OK with that. He wasn't showing the powder in the bathroom as part of the science experiment, so it sounds like he was goofing off.

 @ "look alike"

yea. felony is way too much

ok i do not doubt the kid knew exactly what he was doing. He knew bringing in something like that was going to get comments about it being cocaine.

I agree with the schools punishment. but a Felony is way to much. but i really can not be to sympathetic for him.
