How would your opinions have changed if the story had been:

MAJOR CITY - A local policeman died Sunday after he was shot in a brawl that police said began when he tried to enforce the city's new ban on unregistered handguns.

<NAME>, <AGE>, died about 11 hours after the late-night fight.

Police arrested two brothers, <NAME> and <NAME>, shortly after the fight and charged them with assault. Prosecutors had not decided Sunday whether to upgrade the charges because of <VICTIM>'s death.

<VICTIM> had seen the men holding the gun, approached the men about 2:30 a.m. and asked them to produce their gun license/registration, a police spokesman said. It was unclear which of the brothers owned the gun, he said.

Harsh words were exchanged and the brawl began when <VICTIM> tried to arrest <NAME> for disorderly behavior, witnesses told police. <VICTIM> was shot in the fight, but it was unclear who shot him or with what, the spokesman said.

The ban on unregistered weapons took effect late last month.
I think its sad that the NRA and gun advocates have an Amendment to fall back on for their gun fetish yet smokers left and right are being victimized for an addiction they can hardly control. And I bet big money that drunks have been responsible for more bodily harm and loss of life than second-hand smoke. Believe it or not, drinking and smoking go hand-in-hand...they are both vices we fall back on to relieve stress in social settings. I don't smoke and I don't like the smell of cigarrettes, but I know what to expect when I walk into a bar and I can deal with my clothes smelling the way they do when I leave. If you want to take on Big Tobacco, go after the companies that make the cigarettes and have lied to us a countless number of times about the health effects of smoking. Already milked that cow? Spend that money on smoker education and wait for the practice to die naturally.

nO, THE REASON THE GUY WAS KILLED WAS BECAUSE OF A STUPID WORTHLESS IDIOT
Your caps is on. Who's the idiot? I think the law is freaking dumb as hell. Maybe this will make a statement.....We can always hope.....

I agree....Banning smoking in such a wide scope is total B.S in my book. I think they have smoking clubs and also nonsmoking clubs. I am sick of some goverment Ahole making up my mind for me....next thing they will do is tell me when to wipe my ars.

The next time I'm in a crowded bar, I'm going to wear a jacket with large knives sticking out of all sides. I should be allowed to wear whatever I want regardless of what it does to the people around me.

Very astute analysis.

IMHO.. according to bigoted NRA goons, guns are safer than cigarettes. Is that a statistically proven fact ?
