Five 50 lb bags or 250 pounds total. Is this considered bulk? This should last about 5 months.

that's a lot of empty/garbage calories to consume in only 5 months! ...are you sure you're OK?

i love, love, love sushi rice. i love it so much i use it for non-sushi preparations.

the best results are when using either a hangiri, or something that has the same function. To get the perfect consistency, you need to cool down the rice quickly once cooked, on a moisture-dispersing surface (i.e. wood). wait for it to cool down and then add the mirin/vinegar mixture.

i myself got a $200 japanese-import sushi rice cooker, one of those fancy thingamajigs with induction heating and a computer chip inside, but with hindsight you can do well with a standard pot and lid, *IF* you get the right proportions. but you probably know all this already.

oh and do not underestimate the importance of whashing/soaking the rice.

Now you're going to get Jules who eats Uncle Ben rice once a month come in here and tell you rice cookers are stupid and unnecessary and he can cook perfect rice in a pan on the stove. :D

We have 2 rice cookers. One for use and one for backup. Both are Japanese and made in Japan.
Wife made some gimbap for lunch.

Bowl of rice is about 130 grams. So if person eats 2 bowls of rice a day, that's 260 grams a day. Multiple that by 365 days and that's 94.9 kilo or little over 209 lbs. We're family of 3 so that's 627 pounds of rice a year or about 52.25 pounds of rice a month. We go through about one 50 lb bag of rice a month so that's about right. We're quite normal in amount of rice we eat. Now if you're used to eating Uncle Ben rice once a month, this amount of rice can seem like ungodly amount.

I wonder how much meat we consume in a year. I know our meat consumption is off the charts. I should log it. The amount of meat I grill and BBQ is scary. I bet the meat consumption is like 3X or 4X normal.

I think white consumption is much higher then that in areas where it is the main stable.

I have had Calrose rice before. It was quite nice.

I now use Rose Brand from Thailand in the 20lb bag.

What is the differfence between Calrose and regular white rice?
Calrose is a Jasmine rice which is different from Basmati and plain white rice.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasmine_rice

Glycemic index
Jasmine rice has a glycemic index of 68-80. Foods with a glycemic index of 70 or lower are preferred in the diet of diabetics due to their slower absorption which prevents large spikes in blood sugar after consumption. Not all rice has a high glycemic index. Basmati rice, for example, has a relatively low glycemic index of 59. However, it is uncommon for rice to be eaten alone. It is usually eaten with other foods that can reduce its glycemic index by 20-40 percent.

I never had Basmati or even Jasmine Rice. In fact the I don't even eat white unless I get food from a Chinese or Thai restaurant. When I do eat it is usually fried rice.

Other then that I only consume brown or better yet, Wild Rice.

Basmati is generally found in the Middle East and is common in that style of cuisine.

The Calrose I had was a Jasmine variety. I am not sure if that is the norm or not.

Asian restaurants tend to use Jasmine rice.

You can find all of these rices at most major grocery stores as well as Walmart.

That I didn't that know about Asian restaurants. And unfortunately other then Wild Rice blends the local Walmart doesn't carry Wild Rice or even Barley. I was quite annoyed about that when I looked and didn't find any, However they do sell them online.

Also careful with that much bulk rice.
If its ever in a humid place, it can go bad fast.

i have never seen jasmine calrose...
Its typically short grain asian rice.... the worst kind you can eat which is high glutenous.
It makes good sushi rice / korean rice.... but mostly we try to avoid it in favor of brown rice which is a lot healthier for you.

Calrose is medium grain rice. It's US version of Japanese rice grown in California. Rose brand Thailand rice Iron Woode is talking about is Jasmine rice. Jasmine is long grain. Short/medium grain rice and long grain rice are completely different and not the same. I don't eat long grain rice at home. I only eat that Chinese and Thai restaurants because that's all they serve. At home, I only eat short/medium grain rice since that's my preference.

I’m not eating rice much these days. I’ve cut a lot of the simple carbs out of my diet like rice, bread, potatoes and pasta.

Calrose, Basmati and Jasmine rice are probably my favorites though. Never tried rice from this uncle of yours.

It’s true though, I can actually cook rice without a dedicated water heating device.

I bought in the late 1990's. Calrose Brand Jasmine rice. It had a black label and it was only a small bag.
