Calrose is US Japanese rice which is medium grain. It's not Jasmine rice. Jasmine rice is long grain and Thai. Japanese and Koreans eat short/medium grain rice. Chinese, Thai, and most others eat long grain. If you go to Japanese and Korean restaurants, they serve short/medium grain rice. If you go to Chinese or Thai restaurants, they serve long grain rice. Again, totally different and not the same.Basmati is generally found in the Middle East and is common in that style of cuisine.
The Calrose I had was a Jasmine variety. I am not sure if that is the norm or not.
Asian restaurants tend to use Jasmine rice.
You can find all of these rices at most major grocery stores as well as Walmart.
