Basmati is generally found in the Middle East and is common in that style of cuisine.

The Calrose I had was a Jasmine variety. I am not sure if that is the norm or not.

Asian restaurants tend to use Jasmine rice.

You can find all of these rices at most major grocery stores as well as Walmart.
Calrose is US Japanese rice which is medium grain. It's not Jasmine rice. Jasmine rice is long grain and Thai. Japanese and Koreans eat short/medium grain rice. Chinese, Thai, and most others eat long grain. If you go to Japanese and Korean restaurants, they serve short/medium grain rice. If you go to Chinese or Thai restaurants, they serve long grain rice. Again, totally different and not the same.

Are Jasmine or Basmate rices worth getting?

Basmati is kind of a long-grain white rice & is what you usually get with Indian food. Jasmine rice is pretty fragrant (in a good way) & is awesome when served with salmon. Both are available in brown-rice varieties, although I recommend trying the standard white-rice varieties first. Pick up a small pack of each from the grocery store & give them a try! I typically keep 20 to 50 pounds of each on-hand, as well as sushi rice, in food storage buckets with gamma-seal lids. It lasts a long time & is super easy to make in an Instant Pot!

I understand. It was a bag of Calrose from way back that said Jasmine on it. I have not had Calrose since then.

I used to get instant rice and then moved to par-boiled rice. I now do Thai rice and sometimes basmati.
