I'm not sure if the law is just fucked we're you're from, but here that's certainly not true. Matrimonial properties act means everything (debt and assets) are split 50/50. Considering she has a higher net worth than me, this doesn't bother me much. I'm not buying her a house, we're both working professionals buying a house together.

Turns out the agent was crappy - she inserted the clause not even on the instructions of the vendor but by herself. No matter, we got the clause removed and we're all signed up and ready to go now.

Are you the one on the right or the left?

No wedding bells just yet.

What a weird thing to say upon congratulating someone - "Hey congrats on your achievement, hopefully everything doesn't turn to shit for you".

I would never get into a house purchase with a girlfriend. never.

I am not going to say that buying a house with a girlfriend is a bad idea but it isn't a good idea...

Sigh, dumb bitch agent told us on the phone earlier that it was a done deal. Now she arrives asking us to sign an escape clause, allowing the vendor to get out of the deal any time with a 3 day notice, which makes our due diligence period completely worthless. Refused to sign, crossed it out, agreed to a bigger deposit and am waiting for the vendors to sign off on these changes. Right now I'm not that hopeful.

FML.

well, it was a conditional offer, no. Every seller on the planet hates conditional offers. How did you not know that this is how the seller would likely respond?

and yeah, I think as far as couples go, while we have the same "rights as a couple" that you mention, I'm sure there is also just as little protection in NZ as it is here in the US, protecting an individual if the "couple" decides to split up down the line. Shit happens, just hope you don't get saddled with a debt that you can't handle.

See my post above - if we split, I would end up better off than she would. But we don't intend on splitting. I know America has weirdly conservative values, but it's really strange how strongly you guys feel about this - eg it's strange how it's almost unheard of to buy a house with a long term GF over there.

As I said, de facto relationships are as good as marriage here - just with less paper work and legal fees if shit does go bad.

I suppose it's just experience. Lots of things can happen, legally, based on how the title is written if there is no marriage, and a split happens.

And not just a split--you (or her) are really up shit creek if one of you kicks the bucket in an untimely fashion. 50/50 doesn't matter if only one of you is left to pay the mortgage....

I would expect that being unmarried, the other is not entitled to any insurance if the worst happens?

Why cover up the face of girlfriend in pic? It's not like anyone here in the US would ever see you.

Because this is ATOT and it could not possibly end well.

No that's not correct. As I have said, de facto relationships are strongly recognised both by substantial legislation and extensive case law. De facto relationships here are damn near the same as marriage.

i think everyone is forgetting the OP lives in NZ... while what he is doing is stupid based on USA laws... one can hope that he and Godless know what they're doing down in NZ based on NZ laws.

I wish ya luck.
