I wonder if you could get gears in the back, or maybe just swap out the whole rear-end for a 9" with lower gears.

Something like 3.73 gears would make that car fly. :D With the overdrive transmission, I dont think it would hurt your mileage too bad.

Of course the best part is that now people will drive really good when they can see you, expect people to slam on their brakes when they see you coming at them. Especially if you left the hubcaps and fat tires, keep it looking like a mono-tone police car, and stick a mass of antennas on the back.

I can't be sure, as I'm no police inteceptor expert, but I'm pretty sure they're different. The early 4.6 mustangs (96 and 97) were rated at 215 horsepower, which leads me to beleive that they had the same motor as your 210hp 4.6, with minor adjsutments. The number rose to 260 in '99, primarily because of the new heads. I don't even think they had designed the heads that are on the 99+ stangs in '96.

notfred is right. The new heads did not appear until the 99 model year for the CV and Mustang.

After your performance mods, you need really heavy tint, a Rhino bar in the front, and a nice spotlight on the A-pillar.

And you can just about double the "certified" milage.....cops let their cars idle for hours on end.......and while indicated milage may be low, engine wear time, form endless idling, is much higher.

No, it's a Ford 8.8 with a limited slip differential.

No, thats what the car came with but there is a 9 inch posi with track loc in it now. If it was an 8.8 I would have said it was an 8.8.

Yeah they do let them idle quite a bit, this was a highway car though. Regardless, on a police car though there is a regular belt driven engine fan as well as two electric fans for the accessories, heavy duty 4 core radiator, heavy duty transmission cooler, heavy duty oil cooler and a bunch of other parts that allow the engine to idle for hour on end with no problems.

Eh, at least he got the tranny replaced. I'd think that'd be the first thing to go.

oh wait, it's not a chrysler tranny...hmmm.

Cool.
That must have been quite a bit of work for someone to swap in place.

i doubt it's a 9", all stock diffs on P71's are 8.8's. you have NPI(not performance improved) heads, cv's didn't get PI heads til 2001, stangs got them in 99. if you put PI heads on your block you'll be running a 10.3(i think):1 cr which is a bit high for pump gas in these motors. check out crownvic.net for any info you need for your car :)

Doubt if you want. My car has a 9" rear. When the guy replaced the tranny he did the whole thing stall covertor to rear end. The 9" is out of an 80's ford truck.

JAKE: Of course it's got a lot of pickup.
ELWOOD: It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Blues Mobile or what?

JAKE: Fix the cigarette lighter.

Man, it took way too long for the Blues Brothers reference :)
best scene in the film is the segueway from parking lot to mall :D

Woldn't you get better power gains from an exhaust upgrade than anything else? Sure, it's a dual exhaust, but they're only 2 inch pipes, right?

I understand it kept cool. That's not what I was speaking of.....it's the wear to the rings, cylinder walls, valves, valve guides, valve springs, and rod and main bearings that happens while the engine runs, idiling or driving. Idiling gives mechanical wear just as driving down the road, just slower.

Well it runs like a top and I drove it quite a bit - no engine wear SEEMS apparent, and this baby idles at around 800 rpm... with no surging, no leaking oil either, no smoke (so valve guide seals and rings are good because it doesn't smoke). Any car the same age is going to have problems but I bought it knowing it was used. It's not new. The car does run better than any other car of the same year I have driven or ridden in recently - in fact it drives like its brand spanking new. Cops take good care of their cars - it could be the difference between life and death for them.
