During this season, whenever a store clerk perfuctorally wishes me a "Happy Holidays" I always boom back, "Merry Christmas". It nonplusses them just long enough that they forget to have me sign the credit card receipt. I save thousands of dollars every Christmas that way.

You missed the point. The Christians aren't worshipping the trees. They are bemoaning the fact that idols (trees, presents) take away worship from the true meaning of Christmas: the celebration of Jesus Christ. But when "atheists" or whoever try to do away with naming the tree after Christmas, the fundamentalist Christians are up in arms.

Oh now I see. So since Christians decide to have a Christmas tree and open presents on Jesus' birthday, they somehow are worshiping the tree and the presents, rather then the one whose birth is represented by that day!

Well, yeah. And that's often true. Not that I care about that aspect. But the fundamentalists get up in arms about it. And now the fundamentalists are up in arms about getting rid of the idols, and only because it's (for the most part) atheists trying to get rid of them. It's just silly.
