in addition to long histories in the big 4 pro sports, boston/new england has a very active college and amateur sports culture. i'd say it matches up very well against larger and warmer areas like florida, texas and california.

edit: the rings in the picture are poor imitations

Based on the size of the city and nearby population, it's even a greater tribute to the support that the teams receive in order to generate the revenues that they do to be competitive.

They do have a lot a teams that have been successful to varying degrees in the last decade. Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins all have been fairly good to some point relatively recently. As much as I make fun of the area (and that accent) they do pretty well in any sport that matters.

All we need is for a Hurricane to hit Boston or New York so ESPN can remove the 10% of programming not already dedicated to those two cities.

Yeah big deal, Boston still sucks ass.Lets also not forget that the Red Sox are in the midst of the biggest September Choke ever in the history of Baseball

I always wondered what the fan ratio is like in Boston.

people in pretty much every New England state seems to identify with Boston teams, whereas NYC teams seem to be limited to NY, northern NJ, and southern CT.

That's the only thing that irritates me, they pretend like it's this David and Goliath thing, with tiny Boston going toe to toe with NY, but the market is pretty much all of New England.

Other than that, you have to give them their due, they have been the best sports city over the last 10 years.

But they still suck :biggrin:

Even if you include all of New England, it's still 1/10 the population compared to NYC.

14 million for New England, 18 million for NYC ;)

though NY is still fractured by multiple teams (3 football teams, 2 baseball, 3 hockey teams)

going to school in NJ, Yankees vs Mets was always a hot debate... but when I'd visit my dad's family in New Hampshire, it was Red Socks as far as the eye can see.
