^This.

At $40k vs $90k base msrp the GTR doesn't look too appealing in terms of $/performance.

Edit: you could have a Boss 302 for the track, and a Boss 302 to DD for less than the price of one GTR :awe:

I love the 5.0, I love it's insane performance, I love it's power. I just don't know if I could buy one. There's just such a mullet association with Mustang.

The yuppie/Indian/whatever part of me will not let myself like that car.

The gearhead in me (which overrules everything else) loves the performance per dollar out of the 5.0. If I had 40k, I'd probably go test drive an STi and Evo, then go buy a 5.0.

Someone at my work has the new Boss 302 in the black/red paint scheme. I haven't had a chance to talk to the person yet, since he (she?) is in another building... FWIW I have a new 2012 GT500.

I like Terminators, GT500s, and the new Boss 302 because the price/performance ratio is off the charts. However, I don't believe the majority of the people in the market for buying a new R8 are in the same market as people looking to buy a used KB Cobra, a new GT500 or Boss 302. They most likely don't care that the R8 they paid 4x as much for is slower around a track than the Boss 302 because for them it's all about appearance.

The R8 V8 R-tronic with standard tires (P-Zero) not the optional (P-Zero Corsa System DOT-R).
Kind of disingenuous to say it flat out beats the R8, then... Not saying the 302 isn't impressive, but it's also 800cc bigger. If you move to the same capacity* in the R8, then what happens? I think I know.

*the V10 is 200cc over the 302, but it's closer than the 800cc mismatch with the stock V8.

If you want to play that game, dump the $40K+ difference into the Boss 302 and it will ass rape almost anything on the road.

And if you REALLY like that game, buy a $10k Miata, put the $70k difference into it (Supercharged LS7?) and ass rape everything twice :sneaky:

It seems like a good idea, but are there any lap times for high-powered Miatas?

It was caused by someone at Ford taking it apart and putting it back together. That's the trouble with the samplings automotive journalists get.

Are you implying that this sort of issue is common with the test cars that automotive journalists get?

So what is your point? Cars are formulas that manufacturers put together. If the R8 is anemic, it's not Ford's fault. And that is the typical American slant on power. Not as peaky, we like displacement to keep everything out of the waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh parts of the tachometer.
Then again, this beasts also knows how to rev fairly high.

You would not believe how many issues these guys get. Not all are fantastic as that failure, but shit happens all the time.

That's a good question, a few quick searches show this 230whp supercharged Miata @ 1:40.9
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_1P4EVdDh0

A turbo-charged miata w/ 295whp doing 1:36 with a blow BOV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhc1JvE44GY

This lists spec Miatas at around 1:46-1:47 "typical lap times." Not bad for 100whp.

Stock NC Miata pulling 1:52.2 for reference (one could add 100whp with a SC):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfOT2qnOFmI&playnext=1&list=PLCF0E1A5BFD9DC061

I couldn't find any V8 vids/lap times easily... but I have to think that a V8 conversion adding only 200lbs but boosting the power by 100+whp would shave down that time even more.

LOL, OK, I'm playing the game of evening up the engine size. Even at the standard car is more expensive, but in reality it's because it's better in more ways that the 2 tenths the Stang has on it.

wah wah wah. Your Euro trash car can't do what a Mullet car can do for half the price. That's all there is to it. You want to even the engine displacement, then I can even the cost put into the car.
The r8 is a sexy car. It's just way to much money for what you get.
