<< SCOTCH is an acquired taste? Well, the first stuff I had (dont know the name) sucked, but from my very first taste of the Glenfiddich, I liked it. Tequila on the other hand, just sucks, imo. Lotta burn, bad aftertaste. >>
Scotch and tequila have something in common: the cheap versions of each all taste like crap straight up. Don't let Cuervo Gold tell you that tequila is bad. Don't write off tequila as a sipping liquor until you've had a dram of a fine reposado tequila and some sangrita. Glenfiddich is a half-decent scotch. Compare that to a low-end whiskey like Grant's or Johnnie Walker Red, and you might say they taste a lot like Cuervo Gold.
That being said, I'd recommend you try the following:
*GOOD* tequila
Tanqueray Vodka--vi_edit, you have great tastes. I have met one other person in the world who knows the wonder that is Tanqueray Vodka and the two of us have nearly gotten into fistfights with charlatan bartenders who try to assure us that Tanqueray ONLY makes gin!
Absente--it's the legal, wormwoodless version of Absinthe, the drink of choice for early 20th century artists. Anise-flavored. There is a "ritual" whereby one puts a shot of absinthe in a glass, and then places a slotted spoon with a sugar cube atop the glass and then pours water in to sweeten and dilute it. The ritual is half the fun. The great drink is the other half.
While we're on the subject of Anisettes, you could also try Metaxa (Greece).
A good porto works.
Canadian Whisky--Seagram's Crown Royal isn't terribly expensive, but it's surprisingly good. If you like scotches and bourbons, you should have no problem with Canadian Whisky.
Bombay Sapphire Gin--the best gin there is.
Chambord--Berry. Alcohol. Need I say more?
The Glenlivet--Great Scotch, but it's a little pricey.
Johnnie Walker Black Label--I thought Johnnie was the gateway that all Scotch drinkers first try, but you didn't mention it. Black Label is the next step up from Red Label. It has a much clearer, smoother taste, but it still costs under $50.
Think I'll go fix myself a nightcap.
