I'd have to recommend AH Hirsch 16 year old Bourbon. Hands down the smoothest, most complex whiskey I've ever had. Should run you from $40-50 per bottle depending on where you look. It might take some calling around to find it tho...there's only a few places that carrry it even here in Atlanta.

If you want to give the guy something unique and special, this is the stuff.

Fausto

Here's what I prefer among different types of liquors:

Canadian Whiskey: Crown Royal
American Whiskey: Jack Daniels, or Gentleman Jack
Blended Whiskey: Seagram's 7
Bourbon: Maker's Mark, or maybe the nicer Wild Turkey products
Whiskey/bourbon is usually my drink of choice.

Vodka: Grey Goose is good. So is Belvedere. Skyy is actually not bad for an American Vodka. I think Absolut is way overrated.
As for flavored vodka, Stoli Vanil is pretty good.

Rum: Bacardi, I guess. I usually only drink rum in mixed drinks. I don't like Dark Rum.

Not a big Gin or Scotch drinker... just never got into them much, I guess. Tequila is the tool of the devil. 😛

As for other stuff, I like Kahlua, Chambord, Bailey's... actually, there are a lot of liqueurs that figure into drinks I like. Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Galliano, etc.

Try some Polish potato vodka. In your price range and very good with a tasty after taste. Imported and beats all the other cheap ones. Can be used if you run out of gas.

You could always try getting him a combination of liquors that make a kick @ss mixed drink.
For example you could make him whats called a "dumb f*ck"
1/2 Canadian Whiskey
1/2 Aftershock
It's great...if you like whiskey and aftershock.
WARNING!!! Do not drink half a glass of this and then fill it the rest of the way up with everclear.
This is an Very bad idea if...
You have already been drinking
It is prom night and you plan on being coordinated enough to get some

I found out the hard way.

I know you said you aren't a tequila fan, BUT it sounds like you've never had good tequila.

Try any of the following tequilas and you will be amazed:

Don Julio
Revolucion
Conquistador
Porfidio

Otherwise other ideas are:

Bourbon-
McKenna (100% proof, very good on the rocks)

Scotch-
Laphroaig

I don't know if this has been suggested yet because my company's proxy server firewall software won't let me see the rest of the page after about ten messages because of "questionable material" -- my two favorites are Bushmills Irish Whiskey (the best Irish whiskey if you ask me, much better than Jameson), and the all time best is Akvavit.....it is a Scandanavian liquor, the Swedes call it "cotton around the heart".......two brands - OP Andersson's and Skane. Have fun...

Knob Creek is good if you want bourbon. Made by Jim Beam (i think) and smooth as anything. Good with Coke or just with ice. Johnny Walker Black is good, too.

Yeah, if you are trying to lose a friend!

Seriously tho, go to your local alcohol store or liquor store with a damn good selection and just look for something that pops out.

Okay, most of the stuff suggested so far is run of the mill drinking liquor. You'll want some nice stuff.

Ice Wine is great, but is very sweet, and runs about $100 cdn a bottle. Half bottles are $50-75, but I'm not sure how available they are down there.

What you should really get him is some nice Canadian rye whisky. Gibsons 18 year old is good, as is Wiser's very old, but the cream of the crop is stuff called Tangle Ridge. This stuff is AWESOME. It's mixed with a tiny bit of sherry, made in oak barrels, and is 10 years old. I can't get enough of this stuff. I wasn't able to drink rye straight until this stuff, and now I love to just sip it slowly, maybe on the rocks or after shaken in ice. It costs the same as Crown Royal, but is much better (mainly because it's different). If you can find it, trust me, you won't be disappointed. If you can't here's a personal ranking 🙂

Tangle Ridge (10 yrs)
Wiser's Very Old (18 yrs)
Gibson's 18 year old
Crown Royal
Gibson's 12 year old
Canadian Club 12 year old
Wisers/Canadian Club

Rye is definitely something that can be appreciated when it's good. If you want Vodka (not really my realm), try Grey Goose (I think that's what it's called). Very nice stuff, rivals Iceberg in quality.

Johnny Walker Black or Gold label scotch is also good stuff if you're into that.

Sauza tequila sucks, Bacardi is a very good rum (not really a gift type thing though), Malibu is for girls (I can drink a 26er and just barely be buzzing), as is Irish Cream. Grand Marnier is nice stuff, and good for the holidays, but runs about twice that of a bottle of decent rum/vodka etc.

Hope this helps.

Hmm... somebody just mentioned wine. Try a Gevurtrztraminer (is that spelled right?) or a Reisling. Port is a good strong wine that is best with really sweet deserts such as truffles, fine chocolate or cake. My 2 reccomendations above are typically light flavored and very aromatic. Anybdoy that says wine is gay is either from the hood, or from the sticks and has no class what so ever.

Well,

If you like scotch and/or like mixing I'd recommend Drambue...it's about $25 for a 750mL bottle and is one component in my favorite drink other straight scotch: A rusty nail - drambue and scotch...very good when mixed with JW black label.

For Scotches I recommend the following:

Single Malt - Glenmorangie 12 year port wood finish ($35/bottle), Balvenie 12 year double wood finish ($35), or some good 14 year Oban or 16 year Lagavulin (both about $45/bottle)

Blended - J.W. Black label and above - the best price/taste ratio IMO is the Gold Label which 18 year...the difference between Red and Black label is very noticeable...the diff. between black and gold label again is very noticeable...but I didn't notice near as much diff. between Gold and Blue label. Gold label sell for about $50-55/bottle.

If you really want to spend some money on a good bottle I recommend: Aberlour 15 or 21 year, Glenmorangie 21 year, or Glenfiddich 21 year. I've tried some others as well, but they didn't get it right IMO...there are many I haven't tried, of course but I'll get there.😉

I've had some 30 year bottles from Aberlour and Glenfiddich but my favorite was a 1974 bottle of Glenmorangie I bought in England...that was my favorite and it only set my back $80.

Yes...I'm alcoholic...when it comes to scotch.

<<Damn Staight Rob. Kickass stuff. Very exotic and tastes great .. either straight up (neat) or over the rocks (usually with one ice cube). Easy to aquire a taste for and people who aren't into alcohol much (chicks) usually find it easy to drink. I always found it to be an aphrodisiac... probably because I always looked much better to my date after she had 3 or 4 of them>>

Ouzo is the first type of liquor that got me wasted.... it was pretty much the only choice if your greek and there are 18 bottles in the house :Q

Metaxa might also be a good choice; comes in 3, 5, or 7 star varieties

What I used to drink quite often is "Lemon Hart", an authentic Jamaican Rum with 75.5% (151 proof). Only $20/bottle.

There's some type of specialty lemon liquer that is sweet, tart and sassy on the alcohol content. I can't remember what it's called and we can't get it in Utah. I know you can get it in Chicago... Anyone?

Edit:

<< What I used to drink quite often is "Lemon Heart", an authentic Jamaican Rum with 75.5% (151 proof). Only $20/bottle. >>

And it's not Rum 151. I had 'Hurricanes' in Florida made with this back when I didn't realize Florida drinks could have more than 1 oz of alcohol and I wretched so hard all the capillaries burst in my eyelids. Me immediately before the wretching.

<< i'll bet that nobody knows what i'm taking about when i say

not black label...

blue label.
>>

OK, did you read the part in my post about my budget being $50? Mentioning what I would want to get but dont have the cash for is not helpful. I know what Johnnie Walker Blue Label is, and yes, if I had the cash, I'd get that for him. Unfortunately, I dont have $100+ sitting around with no plans for it. Gold Label is, with tax, over my budget, though I may get that since it is pretty close. BTW, you'd lose that bet, as the guy 4 posts above you was talking about J.W. Red, Black, Gold, and Blue.

Oh, BTW, I'm 19 in Ohio, so I cant walk into a liquor store alone without getting booted after 2-3 minutes of looking at bottles. I think I may walk into a store with my roommate's dad, who is cool as all hell about us drinking, and have him buy it (with my cash, of course), which solves that problem......

I'm surprised no one has recommended B & B yet. It tastes like a really sweet whiskey to me. I mixed it with goldschlager and it was actually really good.
