Booting Issue

I recently burned out the AGP slot of my motherboard and recieved a replacement. When I re-built my system, I got the horrifying error:

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

After being told that XP must be re-installed if the mobo is changed, even to an identical motherboard, I bought an identical HD and have been trying to install Windows on it. Unfortunately, the same error comes up and I'm not sure what to do anymore. I have removed the old drive in an attempt to do a clean, unadulterated install, but that has not worked.

Sounds like a bios issue to me.

Enter the BIOS Setup and check that S-ATA boot is selected and that the boot order is correctly set (items 3.1.2.4 and 3.1.2.5 on page 59 in your motherboard handbook)

edit: Windows XP should boot properly without reinstallation on a replacement motherboard of the same make and model. If you're reinstalling XP on a bootable SATA drive, be aware you need to install the SATA drivers from floppy during the initial install (press F6 when prompted at the bottom of the screen)

I burnt the slot by forgetting to plug in the extra molex connector in my 6600 GT. As far as I know that's the only thing that was burnt.

S-ATA boot is enabled by default, and my motherboard came to me with the Silicon RAID Image driver already installed. I tried to boot from my old hard drive first, so that may be how it's still there.

I've changed the boot order at least twenty times to no avail. The Windows CD just plain won't boot up to anything, not even set up. My CD/DVD drive is obviously recognized, as well as the hard drive. At that, I can reformat the drive through my RAID management device and have done so, to no avail.

Is the DVD/CD drive in your boot order? Is the XP CD an original retail/oem CD?

Try selecting the boot device during post........ press <print scrn> key after the memory test. The "boot menu" screen will appear Select the device you want to boot first (e.g CD Drive) and press <Enter>. POST will continue and boot from the device you selected.

I haven't selected the CD as the boot drive that way, but I have been given a selection to boot after I formatted and selected CD, and I have set the primary boot device in the BIOS as CD-ROM. I'll try that now.

Edit: Ok, Prnt Scrn Doesn't do anything on my board. Also, what are the default settings for a 2500+? For some reason it is detecting my processor as a 1900 and reseting the CMOS didn't change it back.

Set your FSB to 166 and reboot. Your 2500 should be detected correctly then.

For some reason the BIOS won't save that particular setting. All the others it does.

See page 26 of your manual. There is a jumper on your board for FSB settings. Although if it is set at the default, you should be OK. If it's set correctly, reset your CMOS.

Follow the directions that are provided in the manual to reset the CMOS. Some manufacturers now want the battery removed as part of the process.

I've seen lots of boards were the BIOS was "confused" right out of the box. Resetting has resolved the problems I was having.

I've reset the BIOS about 5 times both through setting the pin and doing it through BIOS commands.

At this point I would flash the BIOS. If there is a newer version use that. If there is not, flash it to the same. If that doesn't work, it's time to contact DFI.

You do have an adequate Power Supply and have the 4 pin power connector plugged in, correct?

With the help of a professional third party, I have come to the conclusion that there is some kind of defect in the motherboard. I'm going to RMA it and hope for the best.
