I just bought a Toshiba Protege 2000 slim line lappy and it doesn't have any drives, so my probelm is what options do i have for booting to a disk or cdrom?

Can you boot from a floppy usb drive?
Can you boot from a usb cdrom?
What about a firewire card - and cdrom unit?
And finally - would a pc card/cdrom unit be able to boot?

Just wondering since I have never tried it.... Thanks in advance - any comments or suggestions and experience would be great...

Some systems have BIOS options for booting from a USB device, you might want to look in the BIOS to see what's listed.

You can boot to a USB FDD, PC card CD-Rom (not a cardbus model though), network, and of course the internal HDD. When it first boots up, use the left and right arrow keys to move the "underscore" line between the icons at the bottom of the screen. I can't remember if there are more icons than what I listed above. A firewire CD-Rom will not work, I am not sure if anything will boot to a firewire port unless the computer was able to see it as a network device. I have never had the chance to use a USB CD-Rom.

I love the 2000. Ultra slim laptop with a nice 12.1" TFT screen.

There is only one or two types of cdrom drives that can boot the portege up. One is the Targus slimline one, i think model PU950 or something. The other model is the one toshiba sells at their website. BTW, this is a great computer.

You're going to hate me... $390.
There is a company on there that sells tons of Portege 2000, but they have a 30 day ship time.
I called and everything seemed to check out so I ordered from them. Due in about a week. :)

$390 sounds reallllllly shady. The lowest they come out to be is around $1300 right now. Where did you get yours? I got mine last April for $2100 off Pc Connection. It was worth the price and I still have the thinnes/lightest laptop out there. You guys are gonna love this computer!

Yes, the price was very low because it was a pre order auction.
There is a guy on ebay selling dozens of these a week at around $400 to $600.
He has almost 500 positive feedback so I thought it was worth the gamble.
We'll see what they look like when they arrive!

What's the name of the seller that is selling them on ebay? I can't seem to find it. I might buy another one as a gift. Thanks!

Even if it is refurbished, it will have a 1 year warranty "B" stock (unless it is "C" stock refurbished which I have never seen).

I would imagine that it is B stock, and who cares if it is refurbished. Still worth $400 that I paid. The auction stated that it has a three year warranty, which only comes with a brand new one, so it might be interesting to see what I get!

Sorry, it was a different package, my friends from Motorola giving me my free T720.
I still think the laptop should be here this week though... :wine:

Any word on receiving it yet? You might have been the last person to get a great deal on the 2000 as they don't make those anymore and they are no longer in stock with the major distributors.

They are out with a new version that is .3 pounds lighter. But no other major enhancements. Still .3 pounds is almost 10%.
