How about this feller here, sniping with an old school rifle, in the freezing cold, with no scope....HARD CORE!

Canadian soldier Corporal Rob Furlong, formerly of the PPCLI (Operation Anaconda, Afghanistan) - holds the record for the longest-ever recorded and confirmed sniper kill at 2,430 meters (1.509 miles) using a .50 caliber (12.7 mm) McMillan TAC-50 rifle.

I'm asuming this is a .306 round?
I'm unfamiliar with the Mk-13, all the snipers I knew used M40's IIRC
But even with a .306, this is an impressive shot. Afghanistan is friendly to snipers, nice dry, cool, clear air helps visibility

Ha nice! Another afghan totally pwned. This is what they are fighting for. Kill more, just keep going! KILL KILL KILL!!!
Ok, that's enough.

I did a quick search, and Wikipedia says that rifle comes in 2 flavors; .300 or 50-caliber.

Excellent work. Cost of one round... maybe $1... cost of a hellfire missile fired from a drone... $70,000. We should all pitch in and send these guys a keg for saving the U.S. taxpayer so much money.

Every Marine that graduates the USMC Scout Sniper School is required to effectively engage targets at 1000 yards with the M40 sniper rifle prior to graduating. 😉

The intent of a sniper is to put the target down to where it can not be a threat in the short term and hopefully never in the long term.Originally posted by: ryan256

"Effectively engage"
Does that mean strike center mass? Would a shoulder or leg hit count?

103 confirmed kills to 93 is hardly a large margin. Quality is way more important than quantity when it comes to sniping.
Hathcock scored hella points for taking out a General. in the NVA 1 general was worth about a million regulars. Did Mawhinney take out any high value targets?
Chuck is a neighbor of mine, and I went to high school with his kids, so I can always ask him about it.
He talks about Carlos being a huge attention whore though when asked about it. No one even knew (including us) about Chucks record until that book came out and the history channel came to our town to interview him.

If its listed as 1200 meter range, then I'm guessing its the .300 variety.
