Title: The Man with the Golden Gun
Author: Ian Flemming
Genre: Fiction
Thoughts: Interesting book. Never read any of the Bond books before, this one really makes me want to delve into them more. Of course very little is related to the movie of the name, except the villian's name and his original origin. Still, being a Bond fan for years, was nice to finally get my hands on some of the original material.
Title: The Architect of Sleep
Author: Steven R. Boyett
Genre: Fantasy
Thoughts: Kind of a mix in terms of world-building. Picture that instead of humans arising from the ape family in Africa, raccoons reach sentience in north america. A lot of their technological achievements are the same as ours, though they're quite a bit more primative than us. Think average Myan civilization, with a touch of Medieval European thrown in. The people themselves are different enough from us, no question. Far more peaceful, less fearful, no religion whatsoever that I've seen, and no vocalizations. Their entire language is based on hand-signs. Overall, I liked the book and thought it had some really nifty ideas. In the end I am quite ticked-off at it, as it does not have an ending, there is no closure. It was clearly written with at least one more sequel in mind, probably another two, but nothing has come of it. This is akin to watching Kill Bill vol 1 and having vol 2 never released at all!

Title: The Phoenix in Flight: Exordium book 1
Author: Sherwood Smith & Dave Trowbridge
Genre: Science Fiction
Thoughts: After a little more than a year putting this series together, I finally have all 5 books. The fouth was the most impossible thing to find for a decent price! Sure it's capitalism, but I loath merchants who sell simple (and often not in mint-condition) paperbacks for $30+ USD. (Check Half.com and other online places if you don't believe me.) Still, the book so far is quite interesting. The world so far resembles Dune in as much as it contains a sprawling, galaxy wide empire ruled by an Emperor and his family. While it lacks all the "magic" that Dune has (Bene Geserit, The Spice, Holy Mothers), it makes up for it in aliens and more that just human civilization existing in it. One of the races that looks like it'll be a major plot device is the Ur, some uber-powerful alien race that died out ages ago but left their toys lying around. I've just started, so I've not seen much of the plot. Most agravating thing thus far is the names of most of the characters. They range from the likes of Brandon, Galen, and Markham to Barrodagh, Deralze, and Evodh. And those are all just the humans! Still, the Exordium series is supposed to be Space Opera of the highest order and I am looking forward to seeing how the whole thing ends.
