OK…I’ve shared this before, but here goes again.

I bought a house back in 2013 and one of my neighbors is a black woman 78 years old. Born on a sharecroppers’ farm, no birth certificate ever issued since she’d never been to a shop after birth.
Family did eventually get a very of live birth years after she’d been born—had to have it to get into school.

Fast forward to 2013…she’s trying to register to vote. She’s never driven nor had a DL. She can REGISTER to vote because she’s got elect bill, water bill in her name…there’s a long list of acceptable docs that can be used to register—-buuuuuuut…..

But she CANNOT vote because she’s had extreme difficulty in obtaining a “Smart” ID, as required by GA as the only acceptable ID for voting identification—not registration. No birth certificate that can be ordered via that birth certificate on-line thing—both my wife and I used the same thing to obtain ours. Thankfully, both of us have DL’s so it was vastly easier. Her? No listing as she never had an “official” birth certificate.

So I personally spent days with her and one of her daughters (who was having to take time off from her LPN school she was attending to do this with significant pushback from the school), driving first to her birth county then to various agencies in Atlanta.

Unfortunately, I eventually gave up smashing my head into the intentionally built obstacles Republican have placed in the voting Regis/ID requirements. Gotta obtain birth cert. from one acceptable place, gotta have “REAL” ID or is it “Secure” ID—I forget—to vote, no other ID acceptable.

Why? Who knows why a literal ton of identification is acceptable to register yet only one form is acceptable for proving yourself at the polls. I mean WTF? For instance, university issued photo ID good to register to vote yet is no good to ID yourself at polls. Again, WTF?

I know you’ll probably call this an edge case, and it is, but does that matter? Shouldn’t.

I wonder how easy it would be for Bolsonaro to use his military ties to turn the Brazilian government into a military dictatorship.

Conservatism is on the run globally. Even UK Tories are going to get wrecked at the next election.

The remaining votes are supposedly from regions favoring Lula.
still needs to exceed 50% though.

but if Last Week Tonight is to be believed in its coverage of Brazil's election
1) Lula will win in the runoff
2) Bolsonaro is unlikely to leave office peacefully

hopefully Lula wins and Bolsonaro is more bark than bite

His "liberation from socialism" has gone so well over the past 3 or 4 years.
What, hiring gangs of thugs to kill native leaders so mining and logging companies can rape their land therefore the rest of their tribe can be relieved of government assistance in maintaining their traditional lifestyle isn't "freeing" them?

Yeah it's personally no skin off my ass who wins Brazil elections, but I'm glad to see that piece of shit out of power and not on the world stage any longer. He's basically a wannabe Donald protégé.

the amazon rainforest alone is crucial to oxygen production on planet earth. its existence is essential to life on this planet. you should be very concerned as to who determines what level of protection, if any, the forest receives.

Good points about the Amazon, I meant that being in another country/continent, elections do not affect me as directly or immediately in the sense of government structure. But I do acknowledge that all countries should aspire to be rid of authoritarians, fascists, environmental deniers, corruption, etc. and not be cutting down the largest rainforest on the planet at record rates.

Looks like Lula thankfully won the election, but I'm sure Bolsonaro will not leave quietly. There were reports of severe voter suppression across Brazil today. It's like the GQP's dream being able to shut down roads from areas they don't want voting.

Hopefully the Amazon has a fighting chance now because the last 4 years it has been absolutely slaughtered by road development and illegal beef farming.
