Jair Bolsonaro has announced Brazil’s “liberation from socialism, inverted values, the bloated state and political correctness” after being sworn in as the country’s 42nd president.
His words delighted a crowd of more 100,000 – many of whom had travelled to its modernist capital for the event, convinced the far-right populist can rescue their troubled country from virulent corruption, rising violent crime and economic doldrums
This is going to be interesting. I can’t pretend to have the slightest clue about Brazilian politics. I’m doubting Russian Facebook posts swayed this though. The world has taken a marked swing to the right over the past few years, honestly I’m not sure what’s driving it other than he sway of the pendulum. I’d imagine Brazil took a look at the failed state of starving people just north of them and decided its best the government didn’t control the means of production afterall (just a guess).

Been to Brazil a few times in my life since it's where the wife is from.

Shit-hole is an understatement - But I mean...It's hard to find a country that isn't a shithole in South America at this point though to be honest. The amount of corruption in all of South America is simply off the charts to the point of putting Africa to shame. I'm not sure if turning more towards the right is the answer, but it's definitely a change from where they had previously turned.

Part of the election results undoubtedly comes from Venezuela for sure. Not saying it's the main one though.

Brazil Is About To Show The World How A Modern Democracy Collapses
Much like the military once did, Bolsonaro has threatened his leftist political opponents with violence and imprisonment. He has promised to deliver a political “cleansing never seen before in Brazil,” and threatened media outlets that report news unfavorable to him. His vice president is a former Army general who, in an interview with HuffPost Brazil, refused to rule out a return to military rule, and who has posited — over Bolsonaro’s unconvincing objections — that the new administration could rewrite the country’s constitution.

Sounds like a nightmare if the man and his cohorts crack down on democratic institutions.

Yeah, you know... cracking down on modern democracy. Because modern democracy is what we call some of the highest corruption ever amirite?

Based on data released by the Superior Electoral Court, the Movement to Combat Electoral Corruption released a balance on 4 October 2007 with the parties that include the largest number of parliamentarians quashed by electoral corruption since 2000. The Brazilian Social Democracy Party appeared in third place on the list with 58 cases, behind only the Democrats and the Brazilian Democratic Movement.[41]
According to analysis released on 8 September 2012, of 317 Brazilian politicians who were barred from running in elections by the Clean Record Act the Brazilian Social Democracy Party is the party that has the largest number of barred candidates with 56 party members.[42]

Unfortunately, at least from his statements to date, Mr. Bolsonaro represents the worst in the new crop of world leaders (up there with the Philippines' Duterte). From the New York Times:

Mr. Bolsonaro has described having a female child as a “weakness,” and has said he would not treat or pay women the same as men in the workplace.

“Because women get more labor rights than men, meaning they get maternity leave, the employer prefers to hire men … I would not employ [women equally]. But there are a lot of competent women out there.”

In 2014, he told a fellow lawmaker:

“I would not rape you because you are not worthy of it.”

In 2013, he said that he would “rather have a son who is an addict than a son who is gay,” and that he was “proud to be homophobic.” In June 2011, he said he would “rather his son die in a car accident than be gay,” adding:

“If a gay couple came to live in my building, my property will lose value. If they walk around holding hands, kissing, it will lose value! No one says that out of fear of being pinned as homophobe.”

In April 2017, Mr. Bolsonaro spoke about visiting traditional Afro-Brazilian communities. He described the weight of the residents using the word “arrobas,” an outdated unit used to weigh cattle and agricultural products.

“The lightest Afro-descendant there weighed seven ‘arrobas’. They don’t do anything. They are not even good for procreation.”

Mr. Bolsonaro advocates torture:

“I am in favor of torture — you know that. And the people are in favor of it, too.

After criticizing Brazil’s government during a 1999 interview, Mr. Bolsonaro was asked whether he would shut down Congress if he were president. He said:

“There is no doubt. I would perform a coup on the same day. [Congress] doesn’t work. And I am sure that at least 90 percent of the population would celebrate and applaud because it doesn’t work. The Congress today is useless … lets do the coup already. Let’s go straight to the dictatorship.”

In the same interview he also said:

“Elections won’t change anything in this country. Unfortunately, it will only change on the day that we break out in civil war here and do the job that the military regime didn’t do: killing 30,000. If some innocent people die, that’s fine. In every war, innocent people die. I will even be happy if I die as long as 30,000 others go with me.”

At a rally in São Paulo on Oct. 21, Mr. Bolsonaro vowed to imprison or exile his political opponents once in office:

“This time, the cleanup will be even greater. This group, if they want to stay, they will have to abide by our laws. Either they stay out or they will go to jail.”

Hopefully he doesn't embrace Death Squads as part of his Governing.
He will. Socialism to the far right has very little to do with socialism in the commonly used economic sense, and everything to do with liberal toleration for racial and cultural diversity. This is what the far right social conservatives mean when they use the word socialism, or 'cultural marxism.' By 'liberation from socialism,' Bolsonaro means he's going to make it a crime to be, do, or say anything other than what he and his government consider to be socially acceptable or normal.
And he's also going to privatize certain publicly-owned businesses at tremendous personal profit to himself and his cronies.

Probably true, but I'll hold onto my hope anyway.

Or...it means government controlling the means of production. Which is what happened in Venezuela.

As Winston Churchill once said;
“Everyone is in favor of free speech. Hardly a day passes without its being extolled, but some people's idea of it is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone else says anything back, that is an outrage.”

If he meant that, then he wouldn't have gone on about 'inverted values' and 'political correctness.' Nope, Bolsonaro's regime will be no different than the far right authoritarian regimes before him.
There is very little economic difference for the common people whether the means of production is controlled by the government or by a tiny cabal of corrupt elites, both are used to enslave the people, but right wingers will always be trying to trick people into believing that the latter is freedom and capitalism, as their elite uses that corrupt power to stamp out all their political and economic opponents.

It's like MBS in KSA. Anybody in the Royal Family can claim the rest to be corrupt simply because they all are.

The reason that corrupt dictators are always stirring up hate and violence against women, minorities, and the poor is to distract the public anger from its rightful direction, which is of course the corrupt dictator and his cronies.

Bolsonaro is going to make that corruption look like petty theft at a candy store, while he imprisons and murders anyone who dare speak against him or his government.

May very well be the case. I'm not advocating that it will be otherwise. But to imply that it was peachy and then the evil right-wingers came in and corrupted everything is fucking baffable... and laughable.

Again, as someone that has been there plenty of times - South America is a shithole altogether. Goodluck fixing that problem. I honestly think if our military should be anywhere it is there.

I don’t think anyone is saying Brazil was great before but Bolsonaro is likely to make it much worse.

It’s like with the US, sure we have corruption in our politics but Trump came in with a promise to change that and instead turned it up to 11.

It's great for the monied class who take in all the graft & live in walled villas behind hired security often provided by foreign outfits. They're also quite fond of armored limousines. The favelas are just a blight on the view from their office tower.

another thread where the OP admits he has no clue about the subject at hand then proceeds to render an opinion.

By all means offer up your opinion to add to he discussion. Otherwise you’re trolling to derail the thread to be about UC rather than the topic at hand.

How much & to what effect is hard to say.

They've pushed every divisive right wing issue & politician they could throughout the world so it would be out of character for them not to be involved.

Oh bull shit. You got called out for being an ignorant fuck. Educate yourself before you post.

If you did you would know that generally the election in Brazil was a rejection of corruption in the current power structure and people wanting a simple answer. Unfortunately simple answers as we have seen in our country are not solutions but actually create bigger problems.

Just like with Trump I will judge the new president of Brazil by his actions.

Btw if you think me pointing out your ignorance is derailing your stupid thread by all means report my post.
