Wait... what's an example of "fantastic cinema" from India? And, most people think Bollywood is ALL of Indian cinema! 😀
 
Watch Amir Khan movies. They have some dancing and stuff but there is a strong message. I absolutely loved 3 Idiots - it's about how the education system is severely flawed, or Lagaan - it's about taxes imposed on Indians by the British.

I hate the rest of Bollywood. All that dancing and singing and stupid childish soap opera bullshit mixed with sub-amateur production values makes me sick. However, there are diamonds in the steaming pile of shit. Few and far between, but they're in there.

well fuck me silly. i was going to say films like Water from Deepa Mehta, and the type of work that she does....but she is a Canadian film-maker 😀

It appears that an aspiring film maker might have to flee India if they hope to produce anything of actual quality. :hmm:

I'm sure there must be some actual talent somewhere in India, though....there's like 2 billion people, right?
 
There was an interview with a Bollywood director awhile back and the interviewer came out and asked why the plots were so dumb and so much singing and dancing. He explained that India has so many languages and cultures that if you are making a mass market movie, subtlety doesn't work. Because half your audience doesn't speak the language, Bollywood movie making is more or less stuck in the silent movie era as far as plot and over acting go.

Have you seen Dibakar Banerjee's movies recently. As much as I hate Bollywood, there are a few movies which are absolute masterpieces.

Right now, Dibakar is turning out to be my favorite Hindi director.

I hate Bollywood movies as well.

You have shitty acting mixes with musical, and the cheesiest plot/s that gear toward teenage girls.

And, the Hollywood wanna be movies are drawn out through several tapes so that the cheapskate audience feels that they got their money worth. While the non substance plot with little to no action that can be told in less than 2 minutes by a 15 year old girl.

How can movies suck ass more than Bend It Like Beckham get ratting and audience is beyond me. The only plausible guess for me is that brown people watch Bollywood movies to support the brown team and so that they can be proud at something.

Last Hindi film I saw was Omkara, which was pretty good. It's loosely based on Othello (set modern day), and it's one of the better Shakespearean adaptations I've seen (not that I have seen that many...). Not sure if that qualifies as "Bollywood".

I don't make it a point to watch Bollywood films, but I will if I get a recommendation from a friend. I may just watch some classics on Netflix streaming, since they do have a small section of Indian movies under foreign films.
 
I walk by this very large movie poster every damn day on my way home from work. It makes me laugh about Bollywood every single time:

Anyway, I walked by ~40 minutes ago....and I think they did. 🙁 The poster had been tagged for many months, anyway. rofl.

I watch them a lot! Did you know netflix has hundreds of Bollywood movies on DVD and about 80 streamed?
Not all movies are crap, you get 2 to 3 good ones every year. All these movies are culturally very close to Indian sub-continent so to anyone who grew up outside India it will be crap. Also in US you have lots of Indians from the southern part, they have their won Tollywood and stuff and they dont watch/like Bollywood either...

Funny you poke fun of that movie out of all of them. That is probably one of a very small handful of Bollywood movies about something realistic; dealing with a loved one who is disabled.

Most of the movies are about love-triangles and running around trees. Not too different from the muppets in Hollywood who run around naked and kill each other all day. In fact, I think I prefer watching someone run around trees. LMAO! 😀
 
And, the best thing about Bollywood is the music. Some incredible songs with a wide range of styles and cultural innuendos etc. And of course, the hottest women on the planet. :awe:
