Bodybuilders flee drug testers

BRUSSELS (AP) - The Belgian bodybuilding championship has been canceled after doping officials showed up and all the competitors fled.

A doping official says bodybuilders just grabbed their gear and ran off when he came into the room.

"I have never seen anything like it and hope never to see anything like it again," doping official Hans Cooman said Monday.

Twenty bodybuilders were entered in the weekend competition.

Cooman says the sport has a history of doping "and this incident didn't do its reputation any good."

During testing of bodybuilding events last year, doping authorities of northern Belgium's Flanders region found that three-quarters of the competitors tested positive.

As someone who is ignorant to the bodybuilding scene and its history, I never understood why/how drugs run completely rampant through its competitors. Why isn't testing more thorough and frequent in that sport?

I thought steriod use in bodybuilding was just accepted. I know Arnold admitted to using them and I never heard about them stripping him of any titles.

Yeah, well that's what I mean -- why is it so? I understand the concept that if you're clean, you will more than likely lose to a competitor who is using. That's a pressure that exists in all sports.

So why don't they just regulate it and make it so no one uses, and if they do there are severe consequences?

With the precident being set I don't see how they can enact enforcement without eliminating all the previous world records. Perhaps I'm naive in this sport but I don't see any next generation body builders breaking records while keeping clean that previous builders set while roiding.

Can you imagine a sport where no new records are set?

I'm shocked that only 3/4's tested positive.

Obviously the test has a false negative 25% of the time. Bodybuilding is about the most ass-happy retarded sport on the planet. I lift myself for vanity, but on a competitive level? Truly a pitiful waste of one's life and time and deserving of the ridicule it so predictable garners from almost everybody.

It's bodybuilding. It's the sport most open about steroids and infamous for the use of them as well. I wasn't aware that there were tests done outside of "natural" competitions. What do they expect with men like Ronnie Coleman being close (or over at times) 300 pounds while maintaining heights close to 6'0"? The human body doesn't do that without obscene amounts of juice.
