Bobby Fischer Renounces his US Citizenship

He renounced his US citizenship because he's being charged with violating sanctions, but more importantly, this story just rocks:

Agreed. It's a chess tournament. I'm sure we could at least have cleared him for that.

Yeah, it's not like he was trying to import those evil Cuban cigars. He was opening a can of American chess whoop-ass on a Russian.

They were going to arrest him over a game of chess?😕

He was specifically told not to go to Yugoslavia because it was under sanction by the UN at the time, if I recall correctly. He defied the UN sanction and became a fugitive as a result.

The only way I can see "rocks" getting involved with any of this is the crack rocks that Fischer's been smoking for a long, long time.

I'd like to know why the OP thinks this article rocks. What's so rockin' about it?

Exactly! What he did was illegal. He knew the rules, and decided to break them. People cannot choose the laws they want to follow and ignore the ones they don't like. Well, they can, but there are consequences for doing so.

And his behaviour and actions are disgusting. His speeches.... well, whatever.

I hope he never comes back. I hope he stays out of the USA forever. We dont need to spend the $$$ on a trial for him, or pay to feed him in prison. Let him rot somewhere else.

I would say that it's an interesting article. Whether it "rocks" or if he should "rot somewhere else" I think is up for debate. But with his prodigal chessplay, he lost a lot of relationships that make everyone else "normal."

Father: Hans-Gerhardt Fischer (German biophysicist)
Mother: Regina Wender Fischer Pustan (nurse)
Sister: Joan Fischer Targ (dec. 2-Jun-1998)
Girlfriend: Zita Rajcsanyi
Girlfriend: Justine
Daughter: (b. 2000)
What's up with that "Sister:" info, did she die in 1998?

The article most decisively did not "rock". Fischer is most decisively a fruitloop and therefore should indeed "rot somewhere else".

You young'ins weren't around to see the Bobby Fischer furor that overtook the country. Guys on TV were doing play-by-play over his tournament where he took the title.

That being said, I hope he rots in hell.

But, I digress, anyone should be allowed to express his opinions.

He however, decided with forethought, to flaunt the laws of this country.

If you or I were to start an enterprise with Cuban nationals we would expect sanctions too.

People, people, people....he's CRAZY. Stop holding him to the same standards of speech and behavior as us sane people.

Flout.

So if George W gives UN the bird, we give him a pass, but Bobby Fischer doing the samething, suddenly UN law is an important one to follow? I thought everyone here thinks UN is a joke?
