BNP wins 2 seats

Scary news out of Europe today...the far-right, racist British National Party has won two seats in the European Union Parliament, its first ever seats.

BBC article

Moreover, other far-right, anti-immigration parties made gains in the EU Parliament. Link

Fringe groups appear to have benefited, with far-right and anti-immigrant parties picking up seats in the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Slovakia and Hungary. The British National Party won two seats - its first ever in a nationwide election.

Voter apathy may be to blame, as voter turnout in European elections is at its lowest level in 30 years.

We should heed this as a warning and remain vigilant against parties which threaten democracy and the rights of others.

Umm, how is this right or left? They are a fringe group nothing more. Quit trying to make this partisan.

The funny thing is even the "far-right" parties in European politics believe in things like universal health care.

No, they do not. Providing health care to only the white majority is not universal health care. Your statement is disgusting.

They are not far right and you know it. It is more propaganda meant to harm true fiscal and social conservatives.

Of course they are far-right. If not, what are they?

Yeah, white supremacists are a riot, particularly with growing political power. :disgust:

Do you people not realize what the BNP is? Their official mission is "committed to stemming and reversing the tide of non-white immigration and to restoring, by legal changes, negotiation and consent the overwhelmingly white makeup of the British population that existed in Britain prior to 1948."

They have been described as an openly Nazi political party. They are opposed to mixed-race relationships and the founder claims that the Mein Kampf is his Bible, among other bizarre beliefs.

Funny thing is, you'd be as much a tool and troll in Europe as you are here.

Such parties are typically called "far right". It's not like it's something the OP just made up.

Thank you...someone actually sees these fascists for who they are. That voters in the UK, a modern, developed democracy, could actually vote for such a party, especially given the terrible history of fascism in Europe, is unconscionable.

That's fucked up. Let's not pretend tho that all Brits are tea sipping, Queen's English, rose gardeners. Lots of Poles and E euros have moved in, as well as ME's, indians and africans, and you can expect them to react about as well as some of the Right here do with respect to the Mexicans.

On the broader note, sounds like the greater election result was polarization, then ruling center L coalitions lost out and votes moved out to both ends of the spectrum. Protectionism, both socially and economically (R&L), is on the rise. This is a marked event, and we'll have to watch how it plays out. This may be a broad theme for the western world for a while. Will be tricky sailing for Obama I think in his dealings w/ Europe.

Isn't Yorkshire where many of the country's muslims (and the 7/7 bombers) are centered? BNP pulled 10% there

Yes. I talked to a friend in Aylesbury about this. He has a Muslim Turkish girlfriend so he knows that moderate Muslims are pissed off at the extremist Muslims.

After talking with him and reading more about the BNP, it appears on the surface that many of their policies surrounding healthcare, transportation and the environment make good common sense. Though there is also a lot of protectionist policy, as you state, which is controversial.

However, he and many other Britons simply couldn't vote for a bunch of racist bigots. So this is a huge wake up call for the country - disaffected voters, the scandals and implosion of the Labour Party, etc, made some people desperate enough to vote for the BNP. What a mess.

This is probably a reaction to how far left Europe has gone. Eventually people will stop tolerating it.

It is, except the reaction is Racially based. The Immigration policy of the Left is what the backlash is all about. Not exactly something to rally around with Pride.

You realize The Pirate Bay also won a seat? It wasn't just far right groups, it was far left ones as well.

I'd agree that the low turnout allowed them to get enough votes from their respective fan bases to secure a seat or two. I honestly don't know that I'd read any further into it.

Heh England resembles a giant police state so what else is new?

Sounds like the Swedes elected a pro piracy group to the same body. That should make CSPAN look tame.

Not even close to equivalent. The PP(from what I understand) is pretty much a 1 Issue Party centered around Copyright Laws. They likely didn't even expect to get elected and were only concerned with raising the Issues around Copyright Laws.

Since far-right isn't necessarily the correct description for the BNP, what about something different. They are Socialist are they not who also consider themselves a Workers party? They are also Nationalist.

So arn't they more Socialist-Workers-Nationalist?

How about just describe them as a National Socialist British Workers Party?

Or is that too much like the National Socialist German Workers Party?

Fascism != Far-right

Fascists parties in Europe are not far-right. They are just the flip-side of the far-left coin with the communists being the other side.

Fascists are Far Right. They are the flipside of the coin, Communists on the Far Left on one side, Fascist on the Far Right on the other side.

exactly. When immigrants are granted more rights (Sharia law in Britain, anti-hate speech laws that impacts only non-muslims) than non-immigrants, folks are going to be fed up.
