BMW E60 5-Series sales down...

Detroit Free Press:

2004 BMW 5-series

October 14, 2004

Description: Luxury midsize rear-wheel-drive sport sedan.

QUARTERLY AUTO SALES REPORT: An unseasonably cool summer

Price range: MSRPs run from $39,800 for straight-six 525i model to $58,300 for V8-powered 545i. All prices exclude destination charges.

Reality check: The best-selling model, the 530i, has a sticker price of $45,595 and actually sold for $44,055 in September, according to Edmunds.com. No incentives or rebates are available.

The numbers: BMW sold 32,617 5-series cars through the first three quarters of 2004, down from 35,867 for the same period last year. That's well below what the automaker would have hoped for with the technically sophisticated all-new model that went on sale about a year ago.

Bottom line: The 5-series has stumbled in a way uncharacteristic for a new BMW. Several factors might have contributed to its slow sales, including the new model's radical styling, its complicated iDrive control system and a parts problem that stalled shipments from the factory in Germany this summer.

The 5-series is far short of the kind of roaring success BMW expected when it replaced the car that was widely considered the best sport sedan in the world. However, it's too early to call the car a failure. BMW has yet to introduce the new 5-series station wagon, and the 500-horsepower V10-powered M5 super sedan is certain to draw fresh attention when it debuts next year.

I dont understand why BMW is still keeping him after all the reports of declining sales and such.

IIRC they actually "kicked him upstairs" by promoting him to Chief of Design, and his successor is a Bangle disciple.

BMW's design turn really is mystifying to me. The E39 was arguably the greatest sedan ever produced, but now every buyer has to "settle" for a swoopy, goofy-looking successor, complete with iDrive. I am a huge BMW guy, but other than the availability of a manual, there is nothing that would make me consider the 5 series over an E-class.

Yep. A true great is losing its greatness.🙁

Well, the dollar has depreciated vs. the Euro 30-40% in the past year. That hits BMW hard, and they're not able to push the vehicle with the hidden lease incentives like they previously did, and they have to price it higher. That hurts sales.

I argue Styling is not THE issue keeping buyers away. It's iDrive. Go read some BMW car forums. iDrive is based off of WinCE I think, and literally everytime something goes wrong, from the cruise control not working to the radio not keeping presets, the car has to go in for a software upgrade. Imagine if you had to take your car in to the shop as often as you ran Windows Update at home. It's a headache UNDER warranty, and I can't imagine how expensive it would be otherwise.

Recent post at roadfly.org by a BMW 645 owner ($75K car):

Haven't gone back in yet to get the missing voice function fixed (lost it when I went to version 13.0) as I'm waiting for 13.3 to arrive momentarily and will get that at the same time. We're hoping that'll take care of the I-drive problem, but will see.

From another 645 owner:

Software version 13.2 is supposed to help keep the Rollover Protection Fault from coming on erroneously.

From another:

I have had my car for only 350 miles, but long enough now to have noticed an undercurrent of minor computer malfunctions. Lost presets, trunk malfunction, volume control doesn't work, all sound suddenly gone. All transient, but present long enough to be a nuisance and to know they will recur and at some unpredictable time be a major problem...I am left with a feeling that for a car of $80-90 K US, that this car/computer was not ready for release. There is no question that mechanically the car/computer is incredible, but it is becoming clear to me from reading this board and from my own experiences, that the problem is that the car is the marriage of a great machine, with a less than mediocre computer. As with any computer only some of the bugs will be fixed with software. To correct all of the problems may require hardware fixes not necesarily available, or ever offered.

I don't get it, I think the new 5 series looks great.

Not compared to the old one.

At least the M5 will rock, though I like the beefy V8 row-your-own-6 speed of the previous gen

I guess we'll see, but I have a hard time seeing how 500 bhp is better than 400 bhp on American roads (it's clearly faster, but what the hell are you going to do with that advantage?), and I would MUCH rather have a true manual than SMG.

I thought last generation 5 looked kinda bland. The new one looks more sleek and stylish.

I think the majority will say the opposite.

The sales numbers don't lie.

The only good Bangle design was the X5.

For many people, styling is THE issue. The forum you go to is bias just like most other car forums. The people who would post on a BMW forum ususally owns a BMW already, sure they have to like the look to buy one.

You are so wrong in so many ways, and the thing that scares me is that you seem to truly believe in what you are saying

Exactly.

I think the new design is butt ugly and unless you really love the design I think the only reason to buy the 5 would be because it has a manual. But even having a stick probably won't be enough, at least for me.

I still think the new 5 looks good. A car that deserves to be called ugly is the new Acura TL. That thing is hideous.

what is wrong with the car!!??? are BMW enthusiasts turned off by the radical design? or they are just expecting something plain and simple?
