yet another reason why 'Bangle Motor Works' sucks goat balls...even the ultimate driving machines can't escape the design fugliness!! they need to get rid of him fast.

rrrriiiiiiiiiggghhhttt - and that's why it's selling like hot cakes.

The sales numbers don't lie.

The only good Bangle design was the X5.
the E46 is a bangle design, and is pretty nice. i dont' like it as much as the E36, but it certainly isn't fugly.

but anyway, it is hard to replace the best in the world and not screw up. it's just that BMW screwed up in so many different ways...

The front of the E46 was pretty bad in its first few iterations until they fixed it with the last refresh.

The E46 3-Series Coupe refresh (the front bumper) is hideous as hell.

Yeah, I have to agree. Those penlight-sized foglights look like crap, and the "shapely" new headlights are also awful. I still think it's a handsome car on balance, but less so than it was before this styling "refresh."

I argue Styling is not THE issue keeping buyers away. It's iDrive. Go read some BMW car forums. iDrive is based off of WinCE I think, and literally everytime something goes wrong, from the cruise control not working to the radio not keeping presets, the car has to go in for a software upgrade. Imagine if you had to take your car in to the shop as often as you ran Windows Update at home. It's a headache UNDER warranty, and I can't imagine how expensive it would be otherwise.

Recent post at roadfly.org by a BMW 645 owner ($75K car):

Haven't gone back in yet to get the missing voice function fixed (lost it when I went to version 13.0) as I'm waiting for 13.3 to arrive momentarily and will get that at the same time. We're hoping that'll take care of the I-drive problem, but will see.

From another 645 owner:

Software version 13.2 is supposed to help keep the Rollover Protection Fault from coming on erroneously.

From another:

I have had my car for only 350 miles, but long enough now to have noticed an undercurrent of minor computer malfunctions. Lost presets, trunk malfunction, volume control doesn't work, all sound suddenly gone. All transient, but present long enough to be a nuisance and to know they will recur and at some unpredictable time be a major problem...I am left with a feeling that for a car of $80-90 K US, that this car/computer was not ready for release. There is no question that mechanically the car/computer is incredible, but it is becoming clear to me from reading this board and from my own experiences, that the problem is that the car is the marriage of a great machine, with a less than mediocre computer. As with any computer only some of the bugs will be fixed with software. To correct all of the problems may require hardware fixes not necesarily available, or ever offered.

Wow, that really sucks. i had heard of issues with the inititial 7 series models years ago, but I can't believe they still haven't gotten their act together..dumbasses...piss off the rich and down you do.

Interesting. I did not know that Bangle did the X5, which I really like. I am also surprised to learn that he designed the E46..the car is quite nice except for the eyelids.

As everyone else has mentioned, all his new stuff is garbage.

The front end of the E46 and onwards looks like Dame Edna Everage, someone's taken her glasses and made them into the headlights on the BMWs

all the older folks i've talked to don't like the new designs (not liking the 5 series, but somewhat ok w/ the 7 series), but it's popular among younger professionals. i'm 22 and most people my age that i talk to love the new 5 series, yet the older people at work don't like it at all.

those quotes from the bmw forums are unbelievable! that problem definitely needs to be resolved.

Not compared to the old one.

At least the M5 will rock, though I like the beefy V8 row-your-own-6 speed of the previous gen

I thought last generation 5 looked kinda bland. The new one looks more sleek and stylish.

although i dont think the last generation looked bland, i think the new generation looks better than the last..front end atleast

I'm 24 and I hate the E60.
To me, a BMW should look "professional", mean, and sleek, the E39 fits that perfectly, especially the M5, it's like a mafia hitman in a nice Armani suit, it looks very classy and all, but it sure as hell means business 😉

The E60 looks like the bastard child of some Japanese sport car and a Pontiac.

im not gettin any 5 series, although I think the new M5 looks sssooooo badass and I love that car! next march/april hopefully I will be able to purchase a 2001 M3 🙂. I just got my job and have started saving for a downpayment, and I really hope I get it 🙂.

Yeah, those Xenons make all the difference 😕

How the hell do Xenons affect the styling?

ok fine, it doesnt. but it just looks badass with xenons. and i already stated i like the syling of the new 5 series...so my opinion is biased 😛

Maybe I'm old at age 34 but I don't think the 5 is targeted at the 22 YO crowd. Its more of a 30 something professional person's car to me. All the 20 something YOs I know have the 3, me included (its a 9 YO car).

These cars that Bangle is putting out really polarizes the customer base which I think is bad. Do you sacrifice sales for 1 generation of cars to possibly gain more mindshare later on from the younger crowd or do you continue to evolve your designs to fit the mold of what people want now? While there are some 20 YOs that can afford the 5, I would say most can't. Is it really smart to alienate the crowd that can afford to buy it 30+ YOs in order to make a design/fashion statement? I don't think so.

As a person who will be in the market for something like the 5 next year, I doubt I would get one. Personally, I think the new E series looks sweet but its too expensive and doesn't come in stick. I had the Lexus GS and am not a fan of the new design. I'll probably end up getting the an Audi, the new Lexus IS, Infiniti or the new 3 unless Bangle fvcks it up again.

wow. go read the same topic at vwvortex.

its easy to blame bangle and forget that: (1) the competition has improved significantly since the days when the bmw hype was rampant; (2) the price of their 5 series has gone up (who the fvck wants to pay 40+k (before options!!) for a 184 hp 525); (3) focused more on gadgetry (stupid a$s IDrive) than building a driver's car (as was their motivation in the past).

i am biased. i do not like bmw, but i hate when ppl blame bangle for this sh!t. the decline in sales has much more to it than bangle's design ideas (which for some aren't bad at all).

edit: i read gtaudiophile's response and i like it. hahahaha
