Actually I was mistaken. They are currently only going to be 3 layers. Supposedly one or two of the current combo HD DVD/DVDs are single sided so the technology is already here.

I don't remember much useful information in the first 10 or so pages of this thread, probably wouldn't be a bad idea to start from scratch, clear out all the old crap and start over. Probably would be a good idea to have the first post in a new thread to just list the major studio support, and what players are currently available, especially with audio support listed, just to try and clear up the most commonly asked questions. Would be good also to just list out the Blu-ray profile information, as that is usually the huge topic of bickering.Originally posted by: Schadenfroh
This thread is getting rather long, do you guys want me to lock it and start a new one with a clean slate? Or would you guys prefer to continue the discussion in this thread?

I'm pretty sure they're shooting for tri layer discs, and at the same time expanding each layer to 17gb so a tri layer would be 51 gigs. They also said they can replace one of the layers w/ a standard DVD layer.

Wouldn't most movies require two DVD layers though?

I myself am still on teh fence with BR/HD-DVD. I can understand the bigger discs, but 50GB is a bit much for a movie. Discs seem to be more expensive than HD. I don't even have an HDTV yet so...i'm slowly working into it. I did manage to dig this article up that I found interesting...

Anyways, 25gb Blu-ray discs are used when the movie fits on this disc. Tell me, though, I was just watching Lord of the Rings in HD this weekend on TNT (something everyone with an hdtv should be doing), would you rather have the 4-hour extended versions of this movie fit into a 15gb disc, 25gb disc, 30gb disc, or 50gb disc?![]()
