* The number of blood donors in the U.S. in a year: 9.5 million (2006).
* The number of patients who receive blood in the U.S. in a year: 5 million (2006).
* Share of the U.S. population eligible to give blood: Less than 38 percent.
* Blood cannot be manufactured – it can only come from generous donors.
* Type O-negative blood (red cells) can be transfused to patients of all blood types. It is always in great demand and often in short supply.
* Type AB-positive plasma can be transfused to patients of all other blood types. AB plasma is also usually in short supply.

Prove to me that the profit margin on blood is 7% or less, and I mean that the end user pays just 7% more than it costs to collect, package, test, store, and deliver.....and I will start donating again. They won't take my blood so it really is a moot point for me anyway.

The reason I use the 7% figure is that it is the average profit margin after all costs are considered in most industries.

I almost passed out last time I gave blood, and I did pass out last time a doctor took blood (many many vials of it) so I don't intend to ever again where I can help.

I am giving blood again when they come back to my school in late spring, last time I gave blood, I got out of class, got a bit of free food/drinks, felt no different than when I walked in. But I have lots of blood being 6'7" 220lbs...

One time I got a letter from the red cross saying they needed my blood type, but they never got enough out of me(before I passed out and started having some weird things happen) the last and only time I tried to give blood.

However, we did blood typing in my anatomy class, so now I know I'm B+, which is one of the more common blood types.

I'm not donating. It's a multi billion dollar industry. They will shove blood in you any way they can to make a profit. "Sure give us your blood for free or dirt cheap and we'll sell it for a ridiculous profit!". It's also keeping back bloodless surgery efforts which can be much much safer and problem free. And blood alternatives. People are so brainwashed into giving their blood like it every humans obligation and makes you a saint.

Sure there are some people who have good intentions but don't think for a second it's not a massive commercialized dollar endeavor. And that there aren't actually alternatives. They don't want to educate people on that though because it's more profitable and easier just to funnel some blood into you. Red gold for them.

Who cares about the monetary gains from the industry, it's saving lives dipshit.

And of course you will preach your bullshit until the time comes when you need blood that was donated by strangers trying to help and will gladly accept it without thinking about your personal philosophy bullshit you're so adamant about.

How is there any money involved in donating blood. It's... a donation. The people who work there are also donating their time. There may be costs involved for the equipment but I would not be surprised if lot of that comes from donated money as well.

It would be nice to be so naive again. You must be really young. If this whole "chain" of blood is a donation then why does the hospital charge you $300 a pint when you need it? It sure can't cost that much to process it and get it to the hospital, can it?

There are companies making billions off of donated blood people. It has become a scam over the last several decades. Like everything else no one sees it or asks the tough questions so it is mostly ignored. The recipient gets gouged on something that was donated originally....someone sure is getting rich. Who are you actually donating to?

Stop thinking with your emotions. Blood is just another area of health care where costs have gotten completely out of control yet people defend it without even understanding what is actually happening.

I get free blood for having my blood donation card on me if I need it when I'm at the hospital.

Because blood is in short supply as we cannot make the stuff artificially yet and the number of people that need transfusions outweighs the number of people that give blood. And blood is extremely perishable which means that any blood that isn't used in a short amount of time gets tossed. And there are stringent checks in place so that tainted blood doesnt get past. Many reasons why blood is expensive.

I remember the last time I gave blood. I told them that previously, the blood was taken from my right (dominant) arm because the vein was very easy to find. Well, some person in their infinite wisdom decided to go for my left arm that time and I had the wonderful experience of having them MOVE THE NEEDLE around in my arm as they tried to find the vein.

After that failed attempt they resorted back to my right arm and everything went fine from there. My left arm was sore as shit from that though, and I got to walk around with bright neon pink bandages on each elbow. Fuckers.

I'll start donating when they start paying me for the damn blood. No $$, no blood. The hospitals make a killing from donated blood.

WTF hospitals don't charge 300 bucks for blood. At least not here... oh wait, the crappy US health care system, I get it. :p

No seriously, they actually charge for blood? WTF? What if you're poor and you're dying, you're screwed?

I've always thought of how cool that would be. Would be like a gas pump, just watch the numbers go up "18 19 20 21" ok that's good, you can stop. :p

They do give free cookies though. :D
