Hope you never have to take a piss when you're at the theater then. Because it's just as disruptive. There are tons of people around the world who need to be on call for their jobs. That doesn't mean their lives need to be over.

Yep. I worked in a small town, single screen theatre while in high school. Once every month or so you'd see two or three guys get up and leave all at the same time. Then a few minutes later you'd hear the fire trucks light up the sirens.

They were all the volunteer fire fighters for the town getting paged.

In my experience I have been annoyed much more frequently by people talking to each other, groups of rowdy teens, kids kicking my chair etc. than I ever have by people with cell phones. And even when a cell phone is the cause of irritation its because someone is having a full fledged conversation, or texting/whatever. I have never been annoyed by someone getting up and leaving the auditorium.

That's much my experience as well. I also had the benefit of going/working in a small theatre with an owner that was a total hardass. The town was small enough she knew most of the kids and parents. If a kid was jacking around and being a little asshole she'd call up the parents and tell them that their kid was being a shithead and come pick them up. And then she wouldn't let them back in again until they wrote an apology letter.

It was awesome.

I donteven care about texting.

if the movie is so lame that that I am noticing someone near me playing with their phone, its the movies fault.

ringing cell phones and people answering them, are the issue. and I agree, rowdy teens and groups of ghetto ass people in the movie hooting an hollaring are the main issues, not cell phones.

sounds to me like its even easier solved by vileko and Ancalagon44 waiting for it to come out on DVD if they cant handle the movie theater.

It's time to let movie theaters die. Only thing that's still keeping them around are 3D movies which is just a gimmick for higher ticket prices.

Home theaters FTW. It's private, can do almost everything nowadays, cheaper for the whole family, watch any movie any time, eat/drink/talk/text/whatever.

Or you could just start showing disrespectful people the door and the problem fixes itself. But no, we need to take the passive agressive, high tech approach to fix things that could be fixed with a simple "Hey, the movies starting, please turn that off".

While I agree with your sentiment, what you described doesn't work so well in practice. Telling people what they can and can't do only gets employees laughed at and ignored a lot of times, especially with the entitlement mentality that so many people seem to have these days. Not saying that it makes taking the high-tech approach okay, just telling it like it is.

So far as I know most theaters have real security guards, not just ushers. While some people may not respect what a young usher is telling them to do, it pretty likely they'll change their tune when a 250 Lb security guard shows up and escorts them out.

I've got a 100" projection screen in a dedicated theatre that is a good alternative to a theatre. But it's not a replacement. For certain movies there's an energy that a theatre packed of 300 people provides that a home arrangement will never replace. Yes at home I don't have to deal with all of the annoyances...and I can get a beer there ;)

But it's still not the same as taking your kid to the big screen and watching their first movie.

I thought I read somewhere about some special paint that can be used? I don't see why they couldn't use a jammer, it's their property. Really the easiest way would be for the theater to have a big sign saying you will be escorted out of the property (no refunds) if you use your phone while the movie is showing. And mean it kicking every single person that uses their phone. After a while the problem will take care of itself.

You police this rather than set up a jammer. The problem being is you are affecting a radius. Make it too narrow and the kiddies will find out what seats don't have jamming....make it too wide and now you affect a business next door or someone in the parking lot.

Also god forbid you ever have a situation where someone is stuck inside the theatre and can't call 911.

um... they could simply walk out of the theater. This isn't rocket surgery.

what if the problem they are calling about is a danger in the hallway?

and what makes you think the 'cell blockers' are going to be accurate enough to not shower the parking lots too and neighboring buildings

ni cell phone usage is already a rule, its the theaters fault for not enforcing

I am curios how many in here whining and crying like little babies have ever done anything about it.

I'm guessing zero

My wife is a doctor and some weeks is on call 24/7. We go to movies sometimes, she has a pager but mostly gets texts on her cell phone. She puts on vibrate and leaves if there is a call/problem.

Don't all theaters have exits directly from the auditorium to the outside? Every theater I've been in does.

yup.

I know.

its a rather silly argument point, much like blocking cell phones instead of asking people to STFU. god cars kill people, we should ban them too

or the dumbass head of the DOT who wants to block cell phones from being used when they are moving over 10 mph. because ya know, I never RIDE in something that goes over 10 mph that I am not in control of.

you shouldnt legislate common sense just because some people refuse to use it.

punishing 100% of moviegoers over the actions of 5% is silly

if i have a business next door and it impacts my cell phone in any way you want to know who my first call would be to? my lawyer.

not to mention IF something happens and 911 is blocked they are going to be sued out of business.

there is no way to block cell phones for just that room and allow 911.

Like I and others have said, you can have cell-enabled theaters **AS WELL AS** cell-blocking theaters. (meaning: in addition to, along side of, at the same time, etc.)

You can't rely on common sense, because most people are idiots and lack it. And you can't enforce common sense, because like someone else said, it sometimes causes a problem worse than the cell phone did in the first place.
