Blizzard unveils new Battle.net

So you can create a unified "battle.net" account and register all Blizzard games you own with it. All future Blizz games will use this login for online play, and you can merge your current WoW account (optional now but required in the future) and use the bnet login for it as well. Looks pretty good... Blizzard's own version of steam maybe?
 
I couldn't get the damn thing to work right last night, kept auto-logging me out. This morning it started working correctly though.

I would wager at least another full year for D3 😛 We *might* be lucky enough to see Starcraft 2 chapter 1 this year.
 
SC2 will be out before Xmas 09 - they have broken it out into 3 separate games just for this reason

With the re-launch of Battle.net, Blizzard have also started the StarCraft II Beta invite program. Randomly selected account holders of a Battle.net account will get an invitation to join the anticipated Beta.

Shortly after the new version of Battle.net, (called Battle.net 2.0 by the fans) was launched, fans could create accounts, log on and add games to the account for free download whenever they need it. Some features are not working perfectly for all regions, but the site is live, and some fans reported getting invitations to the StarCraft II closed beta, which has not yet been given a release date.

Let me remind StarCraft fans that this is a Beta invite, and looks different than the Wrath of the Lich King Beta application Blizzard used last year. The person who got this message is invited to the beta. This is how Blizzard have picked out beta testers in the past. We'll see if this is just some remnant of that system, or if we'll see more of the "new" opt-in system from WotLK.

Seems like everyone who registers a Battle.net account is automatically entered in to the beta opt-in for StarCraft II Beta. Only random selected members actually get invited though. Regardless, it's a good idea to check your preferences to make sure you are!

About WoW account merging... it says

I assume that means I can merge my three accounts into my one Battle.net account. But how would that work when it comes to logging into WoW? 😱

Also, so anyone knows... if you had a Blizzard.net account (used at their Store and allowed you to register your games), it was automatically changed into a Battle.net account.

Also to add, I was already registered for the beta opt-in... not sure if this was something I opted in before when I had a Blizzard.net account or not.
 
So how will this work? What if I have a Battle.net account with one name, and my WOW login is another? Do we pick an entirely new name? Do we create a new name when we make a Battle.net account? Does it just default to using our WOW name?
 
Apparently I've had a battle.net account without even knowing. I went to register my e-mail and it said it was already registered 😵

Your Battle.net account's name is the e-mail address you register with.

You probably had a Blizzard.net account as it says on the page that they were transferred over.

Your Battle.net account's name is the e-mail address you register with.

You probably had a Blizzard.net account as it says on the page that they were transferred over.

So, does that mean our WOW login will become this new "Battle.net name?" This seems confusing and unnecessary. Battle.net is one thing and WOW is another.

Yes, like during the WotLK beta I logged in with an e-mail address rather than a username as they were also testing the Battle.net account system.

I just don't know how the multiple WoW accounts linked to one Battle.net account will work.

Signed up - and took the plunge to link my WoW account. Linking does require you to enter your authenticator information [which is very important to me]. Login name to WoW is now your battle.net email address. You still have to use the normal login procedures to play WoW - but now you need to be logged into Battle.net in order to post in the forums.

So..basically - battle.net interface is sort of a web based version of STEAM - you can track all of your games, manage accounts, etc. Maybe it's a step towards a single sign-on interface like STEAM. That would be kinda cool - you're playing WoW and someone sends you a /tell from outside the game from within Diablo-3. 🙂
 
If you could remove a cdkey from your account, nothing I see about this yet seems bad.

Since I'm assuming this to be a rather unfulfilled if, it's another bad step for pc gamers.

Nah that scenario isn't plausible. Nobody would be playing WoW if they had Diablo 3.
